hi

just wondering if anyone has any experience with acheing left hand wrist and fingers.

ive played for 8 years. and i play loads and never really had a problem. but this last week my left hand has had a dull ache, and it moves to the fingers. dont get me wrong its not really bad, its hardly noticable, but like any dull ache it gets annoying, and im getting a bit concerned.
my wife is a nurse and all clever n that, she thinks repetitive strain injury..
wonder if i should just have a break from guitar, but i really dont want to.

anyone ever had any probs before?

thanks

louis

Do you experience any night pain /or numbing? I had those same symptoms that very aggressively turned into carpal tunnel syndrome. It seemed like it happened literally in a weeks time.Hopefully its just a RSI and not CTS.I have been doing some Rehabilitation after I had surgery on both hands .I bought a powerball (Gyroscope). The thing is amazing for hand, wrist and finger strengthening.I highly recommend it...great for guitar playing as well

I have some experience in this area of symptoms. I'm 55 years old and had broken my left wrist when I was 16. I play right handed.

The orthopedic surgeon told me that over the years I'd be running into all sorts of problems like you've described if I didn't keep playing, believe it or not. He said this was the best therapy he could think of!

Over the years, I had/have my days where the symptoms flare up from the usual triggers. As it relates to guitar playing however, I've found that it is not so much whatever is permanently damaged in my wrist but rather it was the shape of the neck, the tension of the strings and overall action of the instrument which would either exacerbate the pain or make it go away as I played. Thank God, I have no problem playing today but I must emphasize, I cannot play any guitar with thick necks, heavy strings, or high action.

After playing 45 years I've developed a neuro-muscular condition much like yours. The cause of mine was a binding of muscles and nerves in my rotator cuff from weight training years ago and my years of constant playing. My family doctor suggested a chiropractor who had a new treatment for such conditions and it has helped immensely. The treatment roughly involves deep massage and pressure to the affected and connected muscles plus excercises to keep the muscles stretched. She also recommended that I use one of these silica filled "stress relief" balls to squeeze when watching TV etc.I also rub in Pennsaid lotion several times a day and the combined effect of all this has really helped with my condition.
