Yep Squiers are great, Highways and Classic Players are great. I just think the Mexi Standard is the best buy around.

Sure some are a miss, but any good shopper will tell you to look at what you buy before you splurge your purse. When theirbad their fixable, when their great.... their great.

Don't yet just settle on a Mex standard, The MIM feature many different disguises, Deluxe, Fat strat, there are too many to list.

Have patience and try as many then settle on the best for the budget. Sometimes walking away from a private seller brings the price down.
In any case wether it is a shop or a private seller, see if you can negotiate a lower price, sometimes a shop will oblige if they believe you'll become a return customer.

Yep they are. Priced slightly above entry level, but a fantastic buy that can serve you many, many years. I still have my Mexican Squier series from 16 years ago, on a stand in my front room ready to grab. Right next to my Customshop and Vintage Hotrod guitars, in their cases.
It gets played more than either, when I'm not gigging/rehearsing/recording. Not that it can't do those things, it can.

Just don't go buying one blind, pay a good bit of attention to whats offered. You'll always do better by shopping to the maximum of your limit with guitars. If you've $200 to spend, spend $200 on a guitar and worry about a amp later. Same if you've $4000.
The more you spend, the less likely you are to spend it twice.

53Magnatone makes a very good point too. You can find great bargains used. However if you have no knowledge of what to look for, take someone with you who does. Theres a lot of sharks out there in the used market. less in the new market. Buy from a authorized Fender dealer and you're safe as houses.

I have 3 Mexican made Fenders and all 3 are great guitars and dollar for dollar are much better than a lot of other guitars costing hundreds more.

My opinion may not be popular but a hundred bucks? Don't do it. There are no good $100 guitars. None that I ever saw. I say this to all people who think they want to get "into" electric guitars ... "If you're squeamish about spending money you need to find a different hobby."

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

This is another one of those situations in which I find myself wishing that we could send out a team to shop with this individual. You're all talking great sense but might as well ask a blind man to identify the Mona Lisa. I agree with everyone of you who has touted the MIM Strats. No questions there. I have also personally hand my hands on Squier Stratocasters which were nothing short of absolutely surprising and selling well under $300 street, new. I always fear them walking into some GC and having some jerk sell them more than needed, or not the best of the lot. My recommendation beyond what all these knowledgeable people have offered is to shop with a really guitar savvy person you can trust, if you have access to such, and do continue to hang out here. Let us know how you made out.

Y'know if people listed their location I could actually see something like this happen.

In the past year i have helped 7 or 8 acquaintances shop for their first guitar, 3 of whom were friends of the other guys I helped out, and that I had only met maybe once or twice prior to the shopping trip.

The guitar shop can be intimidating to a neophyte. They don't have all the requisite knowledge to short through all the shiny and flashy products. They don't understand what the differences of the guitars and their configurations are. it's easy for them to end up with a guitar unsuited to their needs. They don't know how to evaluate an instrument, or what questions to ask (or even how to haggle and/or get other goodies thrown into the deal.) So it feels good to help someone get the right instrument for their needs and budget, and to make their first buying experience more enjoyable. It would be easy for someone to get turned off of the whole idea by having a terrible first experience.

I bought my first electric guitar second hand having no knowledge whatsoever. i bought it from a friend who had given up on playing. It needed some repair, but I lucked out in that it was a totally awesome Ibanez from the FujiGen Gakki factory, but I wonder how different things would have gone if I had spent my hard earned cash and ended up with a bad guitar, or one that didn't fit what I wanted.
