Caffiene withdrawal can cause headaches if you are used to drinking 4 or more cups daily and then quit as caffiene dilates the blood vessels and if you quit cold turkey the blood vessels constrict causing headache.Strong cheeses, red wines and chocolate also contain compounds that cause headaches in a lot of people especially those suseptable to migraines.Re ibuprophen and ASA:using both is a no no much like mixing amonia and chlorine bleach-they combine chemically and produce a nasty compound that can also cause severe damage to the stomach lining. When I feel a migraine coming on I take Maxalt RPD-Rizatriptan Benzoate. They cost about $15 a wafer but are well worth it considering the option of putting up with a migraine.I have to take an ASA daily to counter my hereditary disposition for heart attack and I was warned about taking Advil etc. when prescribed the ASA.BTW if you have a feline that's in pain never give them Acetaminophen or Tylenol etc. as it is deadly poison to cats but not dogs.

Well Being French, Caffeine " un petit serrer " Red Wine "Vin rouge and last but definitely not the least, Camenbert, Brie, Gruyere all cheeses... The deprival of the formers would doom me to an ignominious sentence more painful than death.....

Being on the Computer will also affect the migraine as the lack of daily cardiovascular conditioning.
The former relieves stress, a major cause of headaches, due to certain chemicals being activated in the brain...

Ya know, ladies, ya'll do much better with guitars, that's for s--t sure!!

A few things to bear in mind:

-Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin)and Non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID'S)..of which Motrin and Aleve are over the counter versions of ibuprofen and naproxen respectively, are non-specific cyclooxygenase inhibitors. Google that for analgesic mechanisms of action and side effects among which are inhibitions of secretions which protect the stomach lining against its own hydrochloric acid, and NSAID's counteracting the effect on blood platelets for which low dose aspirin (ASA)is prescribed.

-Acetominophen,(APAP-acetyl-para-aminophenol) known outside the US as paracetamol, or variations on that theme is also used for headache pain. In excess it can cause liver toxicity from it's principal metabolic breakdown product. The FDA has urged clinicians to be aware of this potential when prescribing combination ingredients analgesics containing it because there are other over the counter sources of the drug such as cold preparations, sleep aid, and headache formulations which contain it as well, raising the risk of overdose so we need to be vigilant in establishing what other APAP sources our patients may be accessing when we opt to give them some like Vicodin for post-operative pain.

-most over-the-counter headache preparations contain a potpourri of common analgesics combining aspirin, acetominphen, ibuprofen, naproxen, caffeine, with other such lovelies as phenacetin, butalbatol, isometheheptene and pseudoephedrine in various and sundry formulations and dosage forms to what ever extent the FDA will let them and to please a wide ranging variety of tastes, including....if your fancy runs to it.....suppositories. Most of these so called arthritis/migraine strength formulas are nothing more than high dosage forms.

-no one should be taking medications specifically indicated for migraine by prescription unless they have been diagnosed as migraneurs and have a prescribed regimen whose efficacy has been established for their case. In no event should anyone take such a patient's medication for their own headache. Triptans, for example, can do interesting things to one's heart.

-some of you have touted your own particular preferences for drugs 'which work' in your own case. We've known why for quite some time now. However, in the emerging field of pharmacogenetics we are seeing in the future what are being called 'designer' drugs, i.e. a molecularly modified form of a particular agent which functions efficiently in an individual's particular physiology. In other words, your aspirin, and my aspirin, though still aspirin, will yet be different...tweaked, so to speak, for the individual. All we need to be able to do is identify each individual's particular gene pattern for that metabolic function.

-As far as headache classifications are concerned, there are many..tension, and vascular (including migraine) being the most common and frequent encountered. But there are many more subclasses of same not to mention what might be inside your skull causing your pain. There are physicians who specialize in headache and if anyone out there is having more than their fair share on a fairly regular basis it's time for an assessment.

Doc

Not uncommon, put it that way. If you think your headache pattern or experience is out of the ordinary, get a professional opinion, particularly if there's a family history of early stroke or intracranial masses and there's nothing about your every day affairs which could be precipitating tension headaches.

There's a laundry list of things which can precipitate head pain among which sinus issues, vascular issues, tension and stress and more. Rather than by a process of elimination, I'd consult a headache specialist straightaway and let the referrals to other disciplines originate from that point, if need be.
