I'm hoping to get the item that has been on my list for over twenty years:

A metal-bodied resonator with a pickup for live performances (I don't play coffee houses, so I need volume, VOLUME DANGIT!!).

Almost everything I have ever played had some glaring problem--they either:
(1) don't really sound like a metal-bodied resonator
(2) cost more than my first two cars combined
(3) both of those complaints.

However, I have been playing several of the Dean Chrome G guitars for the last year or so.

Price? Reasonable
Sound? Really good; not perfect, but better than anything else in the price range. I might be able to upgrade the piezo/pickup system for a better resonator sound. I like the lipstick neck pickup.

Does anyone have any experience with this guitar or another metal-bodied resonator?

If you want to keep the resonator sound, the easiest thing to do is mic it. Acoustically, you can change the cones. The bridge and bridge material make a difference too. Electrically, the lipstick tube pup will not do much to bring out the resonator sound. I have a cheap acoustic resonator. I like it but I mic it live.

I'm glad you were confused, too, Supro. I thought I'd had a stroke or something...

I think she's encouraging me, saying I'll eventually get the guitar. If so, thanks for the encouragement, pink.

Back to the question at hand--

Has anybody had any experience with the Dean Chrome G guitars?

Can anybody suggest an affordable metal-bodied resonator w/pickups?

I'm wanting to have a pickup for the cone and an electric pickup for hybrid sounds (two total). That way I can go from traditional dobro/resonator to electric within a song or performance, or even blend the two pickups.

Mic-ing it might be a problem because I can't stand still when I play  , unless I attach some sort of miniture mic to the guitar (or mount it inside the guitar like some of the Fishman amplified acoustic systems).

Are you mic-ing yours with a SM57 or something like that, or how are you doing it?

Usually, but I don't move around that much anymore when I play.

I've been looking for a metal body resonator for a while, but I might go cigar box first. 8)

A friend of mine was a big influence on my recent decision to get a lap steel.

Image

He has a nice collection including a 1938 EH-150 Gibson lap steel guitar, a 1953 Gibson Ultratone 7-string lap steel, a Remington table steel, a National Reso-Phonic Style 3 steel guitar, an Exel "frypan" 8-string lap steel and a customized National Reso-phonic tricone baritone guitar; and a beautiful seven-string Bear Creek Weissenborn guitar made by Bill Hardin; an old Martin ukelele, a 1920s era Gibson A-1 mandolin modified with a fifth course, & an octave mandolin; a mid-'80s Dobro, a Bart Reiter open-back banjo; a djembe and various percussion instruments.
