Didn't want to dump this into the mess the other Beck thread has become... It's too cool not to listen to at least one time! This track just convinced me I need to run out at lunchtime and pick up another volume pedal. I used to use one a number of years ago but passed it on to a friend who was playing a ton of jazz.

He doesn't use a volume pedal, but I do. I finger pick most of the time; I'm not willing to give up a couple of fingers to wrap one around the volume knob on my tele or strat, and I want to see a video of you working the volume knob on a 6120 and playing at the same time!

Looks like Jeff should have practiced a bit more before the show! I wonder what he didn't like about the take, maybe his harmonics not sustaining like he wanted? Nice to see him play it live, it's not exactly how I thought he was playing it...

I was always 'aware' of his abilities (The YT of he and Clapton from '83 in also amazing) but it wasn't until the release of 'Rough & Ready' followed eventually with 'Blow By Blow' that I knew he was really doing things other worldly.

6120? Sweet! Won't lend itself to volume swells off the guitar. Still a great guitar though. He looked pissed. He was using Pro Jrs. Wouldn't be my first choice in amps. He missed a couple of harmonic notes, kind of just went plink, plink. Oh well, I guess he really is just human.

I'm thinking those two Jrs. aren't 100% stock... Although being able to use an amp that you can get by the handfull in every single town you ever play in has its advantages.

In Becks last interview in GP, he said he uses Pro Jrs. but, he also said he used and old 50's Tweed Champ to record most of his Emotion & Commotion CD. He is the promotional poster boy for all things Fender these days. He even puts Fender banners out at some venues.

That harmonic he missed is about an 1/8th of an inch in from the 3rd fret. I challenge anyone to hit that accurately time and time again mid song. It's a bit tricky. Jeff if you read this, let me have a go in the hotrod and I'll give you a few tips if you come round with some beer.
The Pro jr's are stock, he uses them for smaller stages, like the Joolz Holland set.
He recorded Emotion and Commotion with his JTM45. He was on Radio2 about a week after the albums release giving a interview where he spilt the beans on a lot of the recording process. And the artists appearing on it.
Suprised he hasn't done more with Joss Stone. She absolutely leaves Imelda May standing on that album.

Niki, check the last JB interview in GP it was only a few months ago. He said he used an old 50's Tweed Champ to do most of Emotion & Commotion, he said you know the one with the rag covering. He said he only did a couple of songs with the JTM45. I agree, about Joss Stone. I think she's the greatest thing since Joplin. He is the master of harmonics, it's unusual for him to miss it like that.

Because of Jeff, a buddy of mine bought a Pro Jr.... He now will not play with out it. Micing larger gigs of course. I guess he found his tone.

I'll have to take your word for it Supro. My chances of finding a guitar mag here are slim to null. :) I refuse to pay to read adverts, so don't buy em.

It's funny how the sound is the same all over that album though aint it?
The power of outboard eq!

I'm a big Jeff Beck fan.

Possibly my favourite... Brush With The Blues

No one plays quite like Jeff Beck does. I've seen him live a couple of times now, Its like a Master class in every aspect of guitar control. Seeing him faultlessly perform Where Were You was nothing short of incredible.

Nice one on making a decent Beck thread.

Andy

Andy, I could still kick myself for not noticing you shout for me at that Beck gig. But then again, I'm not used to people calling me by my forum nickname... at least not in a friendly way! ;-)

Ah well. Might also have been Mr. Beck's fault. His Marshall was quite up there, volume-wise.

maybe another time, eh? 8)

P.S.: Ah. Still like this photo. :D

Geez I was waiting to hear a serious clam with all the talk going on. Like Nik said that harmonic just did not produce the volume he would get if he had another 99 shots at it. He is also playing very clean which makes it doubly hard to nail harmonics that are not in the friendly zone 5th,7th,9th or 12th fret. Damn you sure could hear how hard the callous on his thumb is thats for sure. I just watch in amazement at him hitting a single note and then using the bar to shape it perfectly into four different ones. Just a pure genius on the instrument.
