I like NEVR DULL. It's basically wadded up cotton soaked in whatever soution and it's will polish just about anything...well. We used it on our barss pins and awards in the military and I've stuck with it ever since for my guitars. You can find it at automotive stores or probably even Wal-Mart. hth

Naptha will work for grime, but a polish will work for the oxidation. Just be sure not to use anything thats abrasive! Stay away from household scrubbing solutions like Softscrub LOL......seriously, tried it once........BAD idea.

The absolute best product I have found for cleaning gold and silver or chrome is Sparkleklean solution and polish cloth.First you clean and dry the gold with the solution on a soft cloth and then use the polish cloth ,the results are unbelieveable-really. You can find them here: www.sklean.com or (786)287-9981 or toll free (866)772-7556 .If the silver, chrome or gold is relatively clean just a buff with the specially treated cloth and quick polish with a soft cloth will do the trick.

How old is the guitar? It does make a difference.

I've never had a problem with it. I use it on my '76 Aria, and my Taylor, both have gold hardware and no issues. And the Aria's hardware has seen MUCH better days as it is, but it's been fine. I'm not sure of what other products are out there, but I'll bet a jewlery store has exactly what you need.

There are no abrasives in Sparklear that could damage the plating,I've used it on most of my guitars with no ill effects at all and it worked great on my gold plated G-400 Custom and my gold neck chain.
