I currently have a MIM HSS Strat in front of a Bugera V22 Tube amp.
I love them both but Im going to upgrade one. I will either upgrade the guitar to an American Standard Strat or upgrade the Amp to a Fender tube amp. Not sure which one. Maybe a Blues Deluxe 40W or Fender DeVille 60Watt, Maybe even a Blues Jr.

I can only upgrade one though. Does anyone have any opinions on which setup would sound best?

American Strat Guitar with Bugera V22 Tube Amp
or
Mixican Strat with Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 40W or simular amp

Any Input would be appreciated.

One of the easy test for you, would be to take your guitar to a shop and test drive different amps. If you find one that you really like..well thats it. If not, you cans start testing other guitars. Just a thought...

i've only played 2 Bugera amps and wasn't very impressed. Many people like them though so you might feel differently. What i do know is i have liked every Blues Jr I have played through. I think the MIM Strats are fine instruments for the most part so if you like yours I wouldn't be quick to trade it for am AM STD that you havent bonded with yet. Good luck in whatever decision you make!

I have a MIM Tele through a 40w Hot Rod Deluxe. It sounds great, but really, it's too loud. I don't know how your 22W Bugera sounds, but if you want to be able to practice more easily in your room, get something closer in watts to your Bugera. I really want an American Strat. It would be awsome.

Why not change both? Maybe see if you can get a MIA strat and some other amp. Do you not like your amp or guitar? Are you fine with one? How do these different combinations sound?

My Amp,
I do like my Bugera V22 amp. Maybe the tone isnt quite as pure as a Fender tube amp and the picking attack is a little more subtle. Also... the name.

My Strat
I do like my MIM strat but Ive picked up an Am Strat here and there and they just seem sweet. Maybe they were professionaly setup and had better conditioning on the neck which made for better playability. They just seem to play better, but maybe its all mental. Maybe its like an autograph vs a forged autograph. They are really just both ink and paper and they say the same name. I know the difference but maybe others wont.

Im leaning toward going for the American Strat since amps are a little more affordable, Maybe I can pick one of those up later.

I say get what you can afford and be happy with it. If you get the opportunity to upgrade, then go for it and never forget where you came from.

Thanks for all of the input.

I lean towards American made Fenders because I like the feel of the necks better. You can always save for a different amp at another time. But Bill had a good suggestion, to take your guitar to the store and plug into a few amps to see if you like the way it sounds through one in particular. I have a Blues Jr. and like it. Check one out with your guitar, you might be surprised.

it would be a better bet to upgrade the amp. the guitar can be modded into anything you might want within reason as you go. i love my blues jr and wouldnt trade or sell it for anything. i am currently playing through my egnator rebel20 with pride.
its very different than my blues jr or any other amp i own for that matter.
if you check one out, spend at least 40 minutes with it. its an amp ya gotta spend time with to realize what you have in front of you. i'll never sell this one either.

+1 Me too. You need to spend time with the Rebel if you look at one. It's a well built, great sounding amp with a lot of fun features.
On the Bugera V22, I let the magic smoke out of one on the show room floor.LOL
I wasn't impressed with it either. I would suggest either the Egnater Rebel 20 or one of the Jet City amps. I agree, you can do whatever you want with the guitar as long as you like the way it plays.

IMO..the sound difference between the MIM and American Strats is very small.
However, changing amps can make a huge difference in sound. Try out amps with your guitar.

My Strat is a Sunburst. I changed the pickguard to the tortis shell, changed the pickups to alnicos out of an American Strat, added Fender locking tuners. Changed all knobs and pickup covers to ivory. Added some Ax Wax to the rosewood neck and I have to say Im happy with it now. I know Im waffeling. Guess Im always looking for something to change.

Maybe the bridge is next. I saw the Bridge on the American Strat I was coveting had to screws on the front of it for adjustment. They were on top of the guitar close to the bridge pickup and adjusted the hight of the bridge. My MIM strat doesnt have those screws. Hmmm!

Great input everyone... Thanks!

I would definitely go for a new amp. For the price of an MIA Strat, there are some VERY nice amps out there. Along with Jey City and Egnater, I think the Kustom Defender is about the best bang for the buck. Just tried one out a few days ago, along with many others and it was at the top of the list...ahhhh...decisions..yours is a good problem to have.

IMO amps play a bigger role in tone than the guitar, especially considering you have a decent (not bargain basement) guitar. There are a lot of good 20-30 watt amps out there, but I wouldn't include the Bugera V22 as one of them, and I own one. It collects dust most of the time. :(

I also own a Fender Blues jr. It's decent, but again not an amp I'd purchase again @ $500  I consider them very low on features (although some like that aspect).

I also own a Blues Deluxe reissue and consider it the best that you've mentioned, but it's a "Blues" amp and does not have significant gain for R&R at reasonable volumes AND it's volume is hard to tame @ 40 watts!
