Ha - I just listened to the track you sent. Pant-wettingly good it is! Bag that job, Ninja!

Good luck for Monday! - C

AWWW, Ceri, you do know that there'll be a gold rush for those pants now? I for one will certainly take a look at that song now... *much gnashing of teeth*

:D Hee-hee: a year or two back there was a very heated thread here about that riff, where one noted Forumite contended that it was genius and another equally strong-minded gent countered that it wasn't even music, let alone of any interest whatsoever. (Both those fellas have sadly moved on: they were lots of fun in their abrasive way.)

Our Nikininja then turned the whole thing upside-down by jumping in with his famous view that SRV is nothing more than an over-rated Hendrix impersonator and not worth the effort of reaching for a CD (I paraphrase, obviously). At which iconoclasm everyone turned their rage on him like a pack of wolverines with electrified cattle prods up their behinds.

It was great! :D

DARN! And I missed that??

well to be honest I was just thinking if Stevie played that in an open tuning? It would make things easier for us SRV (i.e. Hendrix)-impersonators! :D

ah, such fun.

I'm continuing to fail to learn the main riff from Scuttle Buttin' by SRV. There was a thread here about it a few weeks ago and some people said they could do it and some said they couldn't. I thought I'd take that as a sort of challenge and went for it.

And I'm still "wenting" for it. Without a lot of success. I put that down to being strictly a thumb and two fingers picker: I claim that it is just not possible to do that riff anything close to full speed without a pick. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

For anyone who doesn't know, here it is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHEVIWpX ... re=related

And anyone who wants to post here that it's easy and they can do it in their sleep - you are absolutely forbidden to say that unless you also post a YouTube clip of yourself doing it as proof. And if you do post a vid and can indeed play that lick then you officially receive the title of Forum Smarty-Pants. Wear it with pride.

I know a man who can pick awesomely quick with his fingers. Check out Doyle Dykes... This one for instance has some pretty quick licks... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WT9eyWrU ... re=related
Anyhow. I tried out the Vaughan. Now my fingers are so tangled I wouldn't even be able to put them on, those smarty-pants!

Good luck with Scuttle Buttin. My fingers ache just thinking about trying to play that. I'd much rather watch a Ninja bait a bunch wild beasties who've just participated in a failed Milgram experiment!

Nah half of what I post is completely intended to rile someone to the point of honest discussion.

You called? Point me to the experiment. Or do I have to command then bait the beasts.

I could say that I rate the Jam as 3 below SRV. 30 seconds is enough for a decade. Except for that song and Down in the Tube Station.

Still we know all the best music comes from the UK, don't we.

Oh man, Doyle Dykes makes my jaw hit the ground in amazement. I don't even know how he does it. There was a nice demo he did on the Guitarist magazine DVD three or four years ago. Can't find the really eye-popping bit on YouTube, but this'll do to be going on with:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7OXXIes ... 8&index=30

Just when you're thinking; "OK, well that's just about do-able with enough practice" - he goes into overdrive. That's the point I run upstairs and throw my acoustic guitar out the window.

It's Doyle kinda saying: "Look on my works ye mighty and despair!"

Still. He uses a thumb-pick. That's my excuse for not being able to do that stuff.

'Night Nutter - C

Though I gotta say, The Jam somewhere around 1980-81 was one of the worst and best gigs I ever went to. Weller's playing was horrible; the sound system was horrible; the venue was horrible. We loved it! :D

I bought a pirated T-shirt in the car park outside and pulled it on over my clothes. Then we went in and jumped up and down so hard for two hours that I was drenched with sweat to the extent all the ink in the shirt ran and I just had this sort of moddish red, white and blue smear down my front.

Epic stuff: never exercised like that before or since. 8)

Cheers - C

I've got a thumb pick around here somewhere if you want to borrow it. I'd be wearing the Clever Trousers if my acoustic wasn't missing a string. Still, these are minor hindrances for such gifted players as us.

You just keep pushing for an honest discussion and they will come to you, I'm sure.

I've got one, thanks. It doesn't work.

On closer inspection, I'm pretty sure mine is broken, doesn't work at all. Thumb picks seem to make me play worse than with a standard pic... Which is an impressive feat in itself!

Two words "Chop Stick". Mining "Nose Gold" after sparing is essential.

Enjoy! (you can tell I had a long dull day at work!) :D

Andy, if I eventually discover you can play the acoustic guitar like Tommy Emmanuel all this is suddenly not going to be very funny. All fellow feeling will evaporate at that point.
