Hi fellow Loungers and Loungettes! Hope you are experiencing a great week so far! 8)

Two days ago I plugged in the electric again and dialled in a random twirling of knobs, i.e. sound. With the singlecoil in the neck I got a sound so similar to a certain Beatles-song that I tried plucking that famous opening riff, but what did I find? This is complicated stuff!

Even though I am not a Beatles maniac, I have great appreciation for their musical work, and now even more. That's the trick they had going: They played jingle-jangly, chirpy music (I am obviously referring to the early Beatles), but technically, rythmically and harmonically their creations were quite advanced.

So now, after a few more attempts, and trying out different techniques (pick vs. fingerpicking) I have managed to get a recognisable rendition of "I Feel Fine" going. I intend to perfect it and get me some other Beatles' riffs under my guitar-pickers belt. Not that I'll ever play them a lot, but it may advance my "skillz"!

So, what interests me is: What riffs and hooklines are you all working on? Who else has their fingers in knots? And who would like to share why they are working on whatever piece they're working on?

Happy playing!

-Nutter

That's a pretty cool one, I didn't know that song. The riff kind of reminded me of AC/DC's TNT opening riff... I guess it must have been interesting to trade riffs in those days!

Awesome, keep 'em coming!

Ha! I can imagine! It must have been very exciting! And to think that all the greats like Hendrix etc. listened to these recordings the same way too... ah, worlds apart and yet together! :-)

HaHa!! I also remember another first sound by The Stones with Satisfaction!! What is that a sax or what?

Of course I was 11 or 12 years old when I first heard the Beatles and Stones! It was all over for me after that!!

:?: I thought that was a fuzzed guitar, plucked on a lower string? or even a fuzzed bass? There sure are some heavy distortions going on there! 8)

Like I said above in an edit, I was a 11 or 12 year old country boy when those 2 groups invaded America!! All I'd heard before that stuff was Hank Williams, Elvis and others of the time!

Howdy!

The last riff I remember actually trying to learn was “Man who sold the world” by David Bowie. It was for a recording and I had to learn both guitar and bass parts. The bass part was a real pain, can’t remember which key they made me play it in but I remember it being a stretch. It took a week or so to crack it, but it got recorded and both were pretty ropy performances on my part. :?

Covers aren’t for me unless there’s a chance for me to put my Big Hairy stamp on it. Whatever’s audible after that will do me!

I love the song “Autumn Leaves” by pretty much anyone who’s covered it so I might have a go at murdering that when I get a bit of free time.

Enjoy! :D

Andy

I agree on the point you make about covers, Andy. I sometimes find them educational; yet mostly boring. Did I just say that?

Anyway, who else is training their chops with some good old riffs? 8)

Just got 3 tracks through from a soul/psychadelic/funk band, that are so pant wettingly good. I'm afraid to cough.

So I'm off to learn them ready for my audition on Monday.

Other than that, for my current band:-
Don't look any Further by Dennis Edwards
Move on up, Curtis Mayfield.
Beds too big without you, Police
House of the Rising sun. Ragtime arrangement, though the band want to do it as metal, ala muse.
Sway. Dean Martin.
Aint no Sunshine.
Lovely Day. Both by Bill Withers

I'm continuing to fail to learn the main riff from Scuttle Buttin' by SRV. There was a thread here about it a few weeks ago and some people said they could do it and some said they couldn't. I thought I'd take that as a sort of challenge and went for it.

And I'm still "wenting" for it. Without a lot of success. I put that down to being strictly a thumb and two fingers picker: I claim that it is just not possible to do that riff anything close to full speed without a pick. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

For anyone who doesn't know, here it is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHEVIWpX ... re=related

And anyone who wants to post here that it's easy and they can do it in their sleep - you are absolutely forbidden to say that unless you also post a YouTube clip of yourself doing it as proof. And if you do post a vid and can indeed play that lick then you officially receive the title of Forum Smarty-Pants. Wear it with pride.

Cheers - C

AWWW, Ceri, you do know that there'll be a gold rush for those pants now? I for one will certainly take a look at that song now... *much gnashing of teeth*
