hey gang- i'm finally putting my first pedal board toghether, but i have some power supply questions.

i recently purchased a box full of accesories when a local guitar store closed up- paid only 20 bucks. inside were 2 power supply bricks. 1-arion, and 1 -dod.both had 9 volt dc out on them.

i then pulled out the old multimeter to check if they worked, and the power on both of them read around 12 volts. i then checked the dc adapter i purchased a while ago at a local department store, and it read about 12 volts, even when i set the switch down to 1.5 volts-weird.

simply put- will i be harming my 9 volt pedals by using these devices? or should i go with something like the 1 spot. i don't know if the little bit of extra voltage would help or harm, so i'll leave it to you more knowledgable folks to let me know- thanks

I use the One Spot. Some pedals can run up to 18 volts with no problem, some can't. You'll have to do some research or just get the One Spot. That thing even works with my pedals from the 70's.

I use one as well, I've used it for up to 5 pedals and no problems--and it will work with more.

i use a Dunlop DC brick and an old boss power supply to run my board.
dont plug the 12volt into the 9volt pedals. sizzle sizzle.

i got my gator gbone yesterday. hooked up the included power supply, and no hum. works perfectly. just for giggles i checked the output, and it reads 9 volts. :D

just curiously, if i hooked up my pedals to the aforementioned 9 volt bricks that actually put out 12 volts, am i taking a chance on burning out the pedals? if so they get stored away for some other use.

Too much power it will overheat, not enough and the pedal may sound like poop.

I use the Dunlop DC Brick on my pedal board and if I remember correctly(too lazy to go look) it handles 7-9volt pedals and 3-18 volt pedals. Works great. I'd be weary of something that reads 12 volts. JMO!!

It depends on the pedal. Sometimes you get more headroom and a little more boost with more voltage. Too little power It will sound bad. I build most of my own pedals.

i am glad i tested the units first. just seems odd that the bricks say 9 volt output on them, but actually are 12 volt.

i have some other projects that use 12 volt, so i'll save the bricks for them

thanks for all your advice

The One Spot has been key for me as well. All of my troubleshooting issues with power supplies bit the dust once I had the One Spot in place and running what I personally feel like is a crazy pedal board. Feel free to trouble shoot and mess around, but if you are able to throw down, just eliminate your worry and grab it...

+1

That's the P/S I'm using as well.

hold on there peoples... how many of you have actually put a tester on your 9v power supply(s)?
most put out more than 9v. 12 is common.
the problem arises when too many miliamps are in the picture.

i wouldn't worry about it.

I agree, and in most cases 3 volts won't make a bit of difference.
