Hey everyone! So lately I've been listening to a lot of Derek Trucks, which made me decide to start learning to play some slide. I went and picked up a clear glass slide today, and find that it's really not too difficult, especially when tuned to open D.

My question for you guys is who are some slide players you like?
I'm not real familiar with too many, and it's something I definitely want to check out more of.

Duane Allman!!!
If you tune to open E,Derek Trucks will be easy to see where he's coming from.
Duane tuned to open E for a lot of the electric slide things he did also.
Learn to finger pick and dampen the strings you don't want to hear with your fingers,it will clean things up a lot.

Any education in slide guitar should entail the study of the following:

Muddy Waters first and foremost because his slide work was very basic and easy to follow. The album Folk Singer is the place to start.

Son House- The guy taught Robert Johnson to play slide and is the reason Muddy picked up the slide to being with. Nuff said.

Elmore James- a monster with the slide

Joe Bonamassa- The guy can flat out play a slide like no one else in his generation. Mumbling Word is a good song to start with from him.

+1 Sonny played locally at the end of the summer this year at a "Concert Under The Stars" up the street from me to less than 100 people in the rain. Sonny played like there were 100,000 people there. He's a true talent and a great singer to boot. Johnny Winter's another favorite of mine. it's a shame he had such a hard ride with addiction. I saw him in his heyday and he was incredible. Earl Hooker is another favorite.

Mick Taylor (unique player, has some pretty tough licks to follow)

Eric Clapton (believe it or not, his slide playing is not too difficult to follow and/or copy, as compared to his regular playing...it's not simplistic or anything, but following his slide playing just seems intuitive)

Ronnie Wood

Billy Gibbons

Johnny Winter

Bob Margolin

...and as mentioned earlier, Muddy Waters is the master.

I've been watching/listening to a lot of Rory Gallagher lately, simply amazing guitar playing, including his slide work. Well worth checking out, as well as all the other greats mentioned above.

Will Ray of the Hellecasters. He uses a mini-slide and wears it like a ring. He's able to mix slide usage and regular fretting.

I totally agree, but who in the hell can copy him,the guy plays some of the most complicated things like playing notes behind the slide....amazing.
I've played slide for probably 35 years and have never seen anyone who I couldn't cop some licks from but Sonny is in a league all his own...and he plays in about 15 different tunings! :D seriously though,he tunes to a Dm in songs like Congo Square and to dabble around in that tuning is cool...it has a dark sound to it.
