Yeah granted Mike, but when it's all you play, ever. All you ever listen to. Something is wrong. Theres a lot more to music than blues, isn't there?

There sure is, but there is also many that eat, sleep and live to master the blues. At some of the jams I've been to and even hosted, they've admitted it.

Interesting read on "don't be a Blues Nazi" :

I think there are many that wouldn't agree, including me, but difference is what makes music interesting. If we all liked and played the same stuff, think how boring that would be.

You get them people at all jam nights, not just blues. The idiot who thinks the only person with a right to be heard is (usually) him.

All I think is that theres way more to music to limit yourself to one style. It's an absolute shame that anyone should waste their talent so.

+1

Even though I primarily describe my playing style as "bluesy" (but not just blues), and most of what I play/write/record could be classified as blues, I agree that it's wasteful to expose oneself to only one particular style exclusively for an extended period of time.

All of us go through phases where we exclusively focus on a specific artist, time frame, genre, etc.--sometimes due to the newness of the music, sometimes when we're trying to wrap our head around what we're hearing, and sometimes just because we like the guy(s) playing. But to do that forever would get boring to me.

...and I agree, the term "Nazi" is thrown about much too casually nowadays.

Also, OZRV, I think Nikininja put it best (regarding attitude/language), but I have to add:

We're passionate about our opinions but we're not jerks to one another around here.

That's why many/most of us have stuck with this forum. Too much bad language and anger (often found on other sites) is a turnoff, and it will lead to people isolating you.

Just as an example, Niki and I are dissimilar in our musical backgrounds, styles, opinions and passions...but I respect him, his posts and his thoughts quite a bit; I feel he does the same for me.

Even though you might not agree about something/anything, try to be cool. At least try.

I'm sorry despite two polite requests to calm down your posts. You persist in foul language. I must say I'm losing any semblance of respect.

If you're out, then please don't return.
I haven't reported this because I honestly can't be bothered troubling the moderators with it. I was hoping you may get one braincell to impact another and step up to the plate.

Looks like I was mistaken.

Mr Armadillo
Yes, very mutual respect sir.
Conversely, Billy Gibbons is one modern blues guitarist I do enjoy. He never fails. Why?
Because he doesn't stick to the same old format for that music. I like blues, I listen to it occasionaly. I just don't center all of my musical focus on it.

Hi Mike: been watching this thread quietly. Your post says everything that needs saying, far as I'm concerned.

To paraphrase a great man round these parts: ya either dig or ya don't.

Cheers - C

Interesting--that's one of the same reasons I'm such a big fan of Willy G...his ability to make a blues song sound modern without totally dismissing the past...

Likewise, while I don't listen to Jeff Beck extensively, I usually enjoy what he does because of how he takes whatever style he's playing "one step further", similar to what Mr. Gibbons does (with blues/rock). I like Jeff's stuff w/o the whammy bar theatrics better, but that stuff is amazing as well.

PS--I deleted the other part of your quote because I think we've all spent enough time trying to educate the foolish.

hmm. To me Mr. Beck could be compared to Garth Hudson, regarding how progressive their music was/is in relation to the times they were/are active. And though some of Beck's and Hudson's playing may be "far out", it's just that what differenciates an originator from a pro.
It's like with all art, I guess. Some of it I'm just not ready for. But I like the way it propells my brain forward! 8)

play nicely, guys. And I agree with Niki. We can manage without the power language! ;-)

Cheers
