Fair call too true, I cannot understand why people would listen to it when there is SRV CD's in this world, I think this guy is just all about tecnieque, Although he may be brilliant, It's sounds compltelely lacklustre and over complicated to me. But then (not as bad as Jeff Beck) and with ten times the instrument mastery i think Steve Vai "can" come across to complicated and lacking feel some times.

SRV is great and all but I get bored listening to him. He is really just burning scales and that gets boring. Again, different strokes. Steve Vai is a guitarist who appeals to me none. Nothing he does interests me or warrants a listen, but I do respect his ability.

Who do you listen to, who are your favorites?

SRV, Frucante, Tommy Emanual. Simple tases but all feel...Well a bit more than feel in Tommy's case.... Pink floyd, Then i dig reggae too chops with not alot of guitar complexity.

Not sure what the OP has been listening to, but this song alone sums up what the man can do with his fingers and a Strat (no pick needed) :

+1. All are skilled guitarists, but I think they all play so technically that they forget to express themselves. Jeff Beck to me is the forefather of annoying over sustained guitar tones. Although he has had several bright spots in his career (him and Buddy guy jammin' Mustang Sally comes to mind), I'm just not a fan of over-processed sounds.

Mike recall that discussion about 10 years ago. Me bemoaning guitar solo laden tracks, you sited Beck. I replied he was different because of the vocal like phrasing of his stuff.

Well theres a prime example of what I meant. You don't need to open your mouth when you can play like that.

My wife bought me this album a couple of years ago, and it is just phenomenal, and is the audio it from the show that is linked above. If you don't appreciate JB after listening to this, you are a lost cause.

Tim the comment over processed sounds indicates dismissal. Jeff Beck is quite reknown for just plugging a strat into a JTM45 with nothing in between. Occasional wah and thats about it. He'll often state that he abhorrs pedals, prefering to make the effect himself. Hence the bar/volume tricks.

Jeff can be an aquired taste for some new students to the guitar. His technique is beautifully impossible to copy. His vocal like expressions on the guitar make me think he could walk in to any restaraunt, play his order to the waitress on the guitar, and she would bring back what ever he was thinking about eating as he played.
