I really don't get how anyone could talk John's grooves down. I mean he makes people think about guitar grooves that otherwise have never really thought about the instrument. Like Angus Young, He introduced air guitar to the world, John's Guitar solo's and modern funk/Hendrix simple to listen to totally infectious style had the non guitar people thinking about bending guitar strings like no other since Hendrix, EVH sure he is brilliant but just not inspiring to the majority, Maybe too complex and certainly not enough Groove! Like Angus young who had the non guitar people thinking about heavy chord progressions. It's not always who is the best, Like is Steve Vai the best? i have been a guitarist for 20 years and he is of so little interest to me i could not name a song of his, Or Jeff beck is he brilliant? I cant even listen to him or i spend my whole time cringing at the misses, I can only name a couple of EVH's and as fast as playing is it doesn't get me or the majority of the listeners out there a fraction as much as John, That the listeners wold wide prefer John is just undeniable fact. I personally think his groove is out of this world good and that Flea is one of the best bassists and Chad the best drummers. But so do the rest of the world. Besides the minority. To talk either of those three musicians down as not being one of the most influencial and talented bands of the modern era is just not true. They have made there mark and can produce album after album of songs that are all good. You can argue black and blue as to why they are not that for you just like i am that they are for me but statistics tell us they have made there mark time and time again for near three decades and to near three different generations as a hot modern band who are at the top, innovative and have the majority of listeners vote.

your stating an opinion as fact... do i like johns playing? hell yes, the riff in snow is amazing. do i like RHCP as a whole? hell no, its bores the hell out of me.

My opinion is just that my opinion, John and RHCP's album sales are fact.

people buying the records =/= people thinking they are the best....

I am honestly surprised Mike McCready and Joe Bonamassa aren't on there. Kenny Wayne Shepherd should be there too. But I do think Frusciante is a good guitarist. I like his style and his music. However, would I vote the modern rock guitarist all around, no. There are many different guitarists who have many different styles so to say that one specific guitarist speaks for a generation? No

Bonamassa will never make a list like this because he is the anti-rock star. he could care less about being well known, he is just going to continue to tour 300+ days a year and play for his fans and put out solid record after solid record. Same with KWS, although I am surprised he didnt make it because he is a little more well known with the mainstream crowd.

so we are determining the modern guitar hero based on what is "pop" or what was "pop" enough that a lot of people listened to it? sad day for modern music. JF didn't make RHCP worldwide platinum, the group as a whole did it. I never once listened to the peppers and thought "wow this guitarist is great". If anything it was Anthony Kiedis or Flea as the front men that made the band famous worldwide. I thought as a band they were good together but he never stood out as some guitar hero at all. After BloodSugar they went downhill and more and more pop, more about pleasing the masses than putting out quality tight music. The peppers didnt really get hot until 91 when they hired Rick Rubin. So we are crowning JF as guitar hero based on less than 20 years of work where they had 1, or i will give you 2, hot albums with the rest of their albums being built around the 1-2 "hits" that got played on MTV and at frat parties. You do sound like you are approaching the list as a fan of JF and RHCP though so I understand where you are coming from if that is the case.

Not to say EVH isnt a genius and he is a good player, he just didnt quite put out an album ANYONE would listen to

WOW, just wow. but as you said, you don't like the type of music they play. I am 32, and more people in my circles respect and know of EVH than JF and when the topic of best guitar players comes up JF aint in the discussion. The younger generations have less input on the topic of "last 30 years" because they were around for less of it than those who can remember back to the early 80's and the solid guitarists of that decade.

I say all of this respectful of your opinion of course. We can agree to disagree respectfully.

I'm not sure exactly what they are determining how they vote as a 'Guitar Hero' but as you see I am merely speculating. Perhaps the most emulated? Did the list actually specify how & what criterea they were voted?
I am a fan of his (..or the peppers more to the point). Then again, I am equally a fan of at least 2 dozen other bands aswell. They had far more than 1-2 hits in their lifetime while JF was on the scene: "The Red Hot Chili Peppers have won 6 Grammy Awards. The band has sold over 60 million albums worldwide, charting eight singles in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 (including three Top 10), five number one singles on the Mainstream Rock charts, and eleven number one singles on the Modern Rock charts." from Wiki. Take Knofler for example, has sold twice as many albums as the chillis (with Dire Straits) and yet still not on that list. Hmmm.

By that I meant 'not everyone'.. maybe I could have worded that better. But really, thats rather subjective. For example, when I was travelling a few years ago I met a cool bunch of young Canadians from winnipeg on my travels. We were driving in a car through Greece and they insisted that they play some tunes through the car stereo. When they played I guess what is a blend of country with a little dash of rock, I actually thought they were joking- but they werent. They got right into it and I was open to what they were playing, but I decided that type of music wasnt for me. I just couldn't get into it like they did. I think at the time I was listening to Foo Fighters and Green Day. I guess people in the area they lived like country music and I do know that type of music is popular in America but down my ways and in Australia, for the young generation it is far from being popular. I guess thats the way the trend goes in our neck of the woods. Perhaps Van Halen has enjoyed more popularity where you are than in my part of the world. They have had some popularity here, and I do have an old 'greatest hits' cd but there are only 3 songs on it that I can really listen to. Then again, thats just my taste of music.

I wasnt getting into the discussion based on what I liked, I was trying to perhaos question how they did the selection for the list. I guess much like it's down to the masses that vote :?

re-read my post, I made no reference to them going together..

I like having intelligent conversation and debate about things im passionate about. Blackcat deserves a well laid out & respectful answer, as he has allways given to others.. Just saying.

Beating around in the bush on the otherhand- has a different meaning.. where I'm from.

I have never seen a list that everyone really agreed with- it's such a diverse and subjective debate..
