Hey good call on that one Floyd! We seem to disagree on the Frusciante thing, but I do think Jerry Cantrell should be on there before a few of the other guys. I still think not having Van Halen and Dimebag on the list is ridiculous as well.

i mean for Christ's sake, the guy played and wrote some truly amazing riffs all the while staying in perfect (and often quite complex) vocal harmony with Layne (aka GOD)

Ah yes...another incredible guitarist. Gotta love his version of the Guitar Boogie. That's how I found about him, and I've been blown away by just about every other thing I've heard of him.

Yeah, I'm not much of a harmony singer, but I can imagine that with the complex riffs and chord voicings he likes, that it'd be rather difficult to also be singing harmony. Id venture to say that a lot of current guitarists (rock and otherwise) have been influenced by Cantrell. I know I certainly was.

All that list says to me is that its impossible to put guitarists into a list !
How do you say ........... is better than ............ when compared to ......... ?
Don't buy it.
There are guitarists on that list who are great guitarists but the music they play just don't appeal to me so there for if i was writing the list doubt id of considered them in the first place etc etc ......

BCB you cannot let these list get you twisted which I learned from when RollingStone magazine did the 100 greatest guitarist in rock history and had VH #70 Randy Rhoades #85 Danny Gatton #63 lets just take those three for example and put them next to Jack White #17, Johnny Ramone #16 and Kurt Cobain #12. Is it even worth arguing or getting upset, no it just goes to show that they are clueless over at RS.

well all i keep hearing from the guys at TGP is how Jack White is a blues god, so I must be missing something when I listen to him. When I listen to any of his work other than his awful cover of Son House's Death Letter, I don't hear any blues. When I watch the White Stripers perform the only thing interesting I see are Meg Whites tiddies.

Best guitarists of the last 30 years? give me a break. Eddie Van Halen? I do agree a bit with the bit about being a bit unhinged to be really good though, John 5's playing, buckethead...they are completely in a different league to the guys mentioned in the top 10. There are some influential people in there like Jonny Greenwood, Tom Morelle, Slash, Prince and Kirk Hammet but they aren't the best players by a mile. You could also add people like Vai and Satriani in the best 10 guitarists ever!

Jack White is actually doing what so many of us say we want to hear in modern music:

He's making music without boundaries, from a source that has originality and is not completely beholden to some previous axe slinger's style.

Both he and Dan Auerbach (of the Black Keys) intrigue me, not because they're technically great or anything, but because they're not doing the same bloody thing I've heard a million times before.

We all keep clamoring "give me something new" and when someone does, we lambast the poor dude.

Yes, he's raw. Yes, he's sloppy. Yes, he's unconventional and jarring.

People said the same thing about Howlin' Wolf, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Frank Zappa and Bob Dylan, too.

He may or may not be your cup of tea, but at least he's not another safe and boring retread...if he were, we would call him John Mayer.
