Rumor has it, that there are some excellent luthiers in Havana that can make you a classical or acoustic guitar custom for around $200-300. They are supposedly using tools from 50s and guitar building is pretty much a hand craft since they are under US embargo. I might be going to Cuba for a week vacation so I can rent a car and drive to Havana.

Does anybody know anything about this, owns one or is it a street myth?

I hope someone has experience with this as i have had the same thought as you while vacationing in Cuba and Costa Rica

Handmade guitar at that price would be well worth the trip into the city from the resort

This is true. I have been to Cuba only once but I travelled with a friend who is a wonderful classical guitar player and there are many highly skilled luthiers there. Not to mention there is a wonderful music scene there. Eliades Ochoa is a spectacular Cuban guitarist and he plays many guitars that are made locally in Havana. I don't remember the exact prices and don't know much about how you would or if you would be able to export one with you, but I did see a lot of super instruments there. I'll see if I can get more info for you too.

Have a safe trip, you may want to inquire with US Customs as to wether you can purchase an instrument there and bring it back. Having it confiscated at the security border is not something to experience.

If not possible, Mexico also has excellent luthiers, there was a feature on them in the spring 2008 issue of " The Fretboard Journal " title of the article is " A Visit With Los Guitarreros De Paracho, Mexico Guitar Town."

Wouldn't you guys (US) be in big trouble with US customs returning from Cuba with or without a Cuban guitar?

Us guys, being Canadian, have no issues with our Cuban brothers.
