The only thing I did not enjoy his playing on was the encores which were Neil Youngs -Keep on Rocking in the Free World and Hendrix's Little Wing and Voodoo Child as he went over the top and the Harmonic Minor runs did not fit into the groove that well.

That's a big part of my distaste for his playing. His solos, while technically amazing, usually seem tacked on and an ill fit within the context of the song itself.

...and his use of harmonic minor runs in those songs makes me think of the story about the guy who strapped himself to a telephone post during a hurricane, just to show that "he could do it."

Just because you can do doesn't mean that it is a good idea to do it.

I have had the pleasure of seeing Yngwie perform live 4 times. Each time I had excellent seats and was able to really see him up close. His live performances are something to see, he is unreal.

Now I understand that most folks don't like him for whatever reason but that doesn't take away from his abilities. Yes, he is abrasive in his attitude, true he has an ego and I am sure that he could take a little better care of his instruments, but he is still a master of the guitar. His early work is proof of this, at age 19 he was performing acts of wonder that would floor the most accomplished of players.

As for emotion and soul? Well, I think he has the ability to evoke them, it may be by using diminished or augmented runs at the speed of light but he still can do it. I am not a fan of only playing fast but he plays a lot like Paganini on the violin. Some of that music flies at sonic speeds too.

There are artists that I don't particularly care for but I don't go around calling them names or criticizing them, I am not that good a player so I don't feel I have any grounds to stand on as far as that goes. I would prefer to let everyone play what they want and just hope they enjoy it. A music critic I am not, I only know what I like, all the rest is there for everyone else to enjoy.

Venturesfan you raise another trait about the guy that I see a lot of complaints about that I just dont get-the way he treats his guitars. Why are so many people offended how he piles up his axes. To him they are just tools that he performs his job on. The guy has a ton of guitars and just because he does not have them all polished on a stand makes no sense as that is not going to make him play better. Personally I take great care of my gear. but you can be sure when he picks up a guitar to play it is like butter.

i honestly couldnt give a flying s**t how he treats MOST of his guitars.... what makes me mad is that he has a 54 STRAT, one of the first 10 made IIRC, just sitting on the floor in that pile of guitars.... thats not just any vintage guitar, ITS A PIECE OF HISTORY!!!! it pisses me off that some ignorant jerk like him that doesnt even appreciate it can have it yet someone who would actually care about it and love it is left with nothing but a dream.

He is a tool but It's his, he bought it, he can do what he wants with it.
It's no worse than someone putting it in a glass case and never touching it.
It's a piece of guitar history and there were many like it at the time. The guy is a robot wanker who plays with absolutely no feeling or emotion. If I want classical guitar, I'll listen to Andrés Segovia.

True, it is his axe and he can burn it if that is his desire. I don't like the idea of it being in a glass case or a museum, either, BUT...

I was taught (as a child) that you should use your tools, possessions, etc., as needed, but treat those things with respect. Not treating material possessions with respect is a sign that you have no respect for others, or even yourself.

Maybe that's why he's such an arrogant jackass...he's compensating for low-self esteem...

Naw, that's not it. He's just an arrogant jackass.

I can certainly understand the way most people feel about the way Yngwie treats his guitars. I would never pile mine up the way he does. However, I must say that I don't give a rats $@! about it. I don't listen to his stuff because of his habits or attitude. I am very impressed with his playing, especially his early stuff. Emotion is a very subjective thing, it means something different to everyone. Just as has been stated here multiple times, Yngwie is an arrogant $@!. That doesn't bother me since I don't have to be around the guy. It's just a matter of taste.

I have spent countless hours trying to figure out his stuff. Some of it I can get but most of it eludes me. That is part of the allure to me. It gives me a real challenge, it is something to work on. It's true that figuring out some of the easier music gives you a sense of accomplishment but I can say that when you get even one of Yngwie's licks or runs you have done something. That is what I find interesting, a real test of your abilities.

Again let me say that I am NOT that accomplished of a player. That being said, I am proud of the Yngwie bits that I have figured out. Say what you will about the guy, he is darn hard to cover. That is my only point.

LOL...

Probably half the stuff I don't like about him wouldn't bother me if I liked his music. I guess when I have a negative feeling about the basic reason I would even know who he is (his music), it makes all of his other negative traits amplified...like a jackass with 60 Marshall Stacks....

I'll give him a compliment, just to even things out:

He has great technical proficiency playing his guitar, and great dedication to his craft.

Yawn................

That just reinforces what we've been talking about. Mindless "Look Vhat I Can Do" playing. Was there a band there or just Malmsteen?
