I did, and it was only slightly more worth going than last year. I had a complete technical meltdown during our first show, with my amp dying for a minute or so for soundcheck, my pedalboard going out on me mid-song because of a bad patch cord and my high e string buzzing on my Highway One because of a slipped saddle. But musically it went great. :D We drew a crowd at every venue we played and after that first day I didn't have anymore technical issues because I was able to fix everything myself. (Thank goodness I pay attention to my guitar tech.)

The thing is, with SXSW all the bands are either indie rock with monotone vocals and guitar players who just make feedback instead of playing solos or experimental hipster music. (I actually like a lot of indie rock, so don't get me wrong. It's just that every band I happened to see sounded like what I just mentioned.) One of the bands that opened for a show we played was actually pretty good, even if it was bordering on hardcore/screamo. To see people like Carolyn Wonderland or Gary Clark Jr., you had to pay for an official pass. Which is cool, except when you're on a $150 budget for the entire weekend.

My whole take on SXSW is this. All these free music fests that surround it get bands to come play for free because there are supposedly music biz big wigs and lots of music fans in town. They have promoters and sponsors, so they make money. But they don't charge anything and the bands get short sets for which they're paid nothing. It's basically free labor that makes these promoters and organizers money. It might be worth doing for a band if you already have some contacts who are in town that you could invite or if you sold merch and did some heavy promotion of your band yourself. But if not, you just end up going there and spending money like one of those pay to play venues.

I hate to be so negative about it, and I actually did have a lot of fun. It seems like I learn something new every time I go, so someday when I'm going with my band I'll really be able to make the most of it. :)

Thank you Texas, cool update. 8)
What band were you playing with, or were you a gun for hire at the blues venues?

TGS,
Stuff happens, but it sounds like you had fun. Can't wait for the demo of your guitar.

It was the alternative rock band. We've been on hiatus since our singer moved to Austin a few months ago for college, and we played these shows with a completely new rhythm section.

Surprisingly, I haven't seen a blues band at SXSW yet. It seems like all of Austin's blues giants go into hiding during that time.

It seems that the underground aspect of SXSW in years past, looking for undiscovered talent that might not otherwise be given attention has been traded for high profile commercialism.
This year I saw so many adds on TV/Cable that it seemed more like Sundance film festival than the new wave of artists music festival that it once was, with stars and famous artists hanging about, more than ever before.
The business is coming to take over, so, that it looks like the music folks are going to have to look for a new location, and for awhile maybe the real music will be played again.
So funny about the blues giants going into hiding during the time the elite decide to go slumming to steal information.
I haven't seen that many real blues giants driving Ferrari's or private jets, and I haven't seen any blues giants stealing songs or guitar riffs off of rich white boys either,

Finished tracking all the parts for three songs a couple of days ago. Now I'm just awaiting the final mix. When I get it, I'm going to put a link up for ya'll to listen to them. :)

I got it from these guys on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Custom-Guitar-Headstock-Waterslide-Decal-for-6-inline-/190481757401?pt=UK_Guitar_Accessories&hash=item2c5998f4d9
They had great customer service and got my order ready and shipped within 36 hours! If you're ever in need of a decal, I'd definitely recommend them. :)

The mixing for the three songs I recorded is nearly finished! I can't wait, I haven't heard them since the day we recorded them.

I too have chased the occasional "Dream Guitar". My conclusion? In this economy...Get a guitar that's good enough to do the job. An American Standard Strat will do the job. If that's too much, buy it used. In other words I'd feel better buying dream guitars with my music. If I can't EARN, maybe I don't deserve it...And I need to work more on my playing and my music. Otherwise I'm a collector, not a player.

Hi tzer0: to be fair to TexasGuitarSlinger, she definitely concentrates on her playing and just gets better and better at it. She's certainly a player rather than a collector - and as it happens her playing has been earning her a bunch of new guitars recently! :)

Cheers - C

tzer probably hasn't read the whole thread... who could blame him: It's nearly as long as Vinnypop's and Lonelyboy's Collected Adventures ;)

Cheers
