Texas, those pics are awesome! Your guitar guy applied the decals perfectly! That is the best Strat body that I've seen! Thanks for posting those pics and looking forward to seeing the new "Becks" model completed. :D

That's a nice looking guitar miss Tex,
I've missed the whole ride, but I'm happy for you.
I'm sure your gonna rock out on that beck-ocaster.
Hope I wrote right.

Well, my repair tech is really tied up this week. He has three assemblies, including mine, and about 12 other repairs waiting from input jack replacements to full setups. He said he's going to try to work on mine this Friday, so I have a couple more days to wait.

The assembly stage has begun! I'm at work now, but I'll get the pics posted as soon as I get home this evening. :D

Okay, finally! The detailed rundown on Day 1 of the build.

(Beware of giant pictures! )

The first thing we decided to tackle was fitting the neck to the body. It fit perfectly (but tightly) before the paint, but after the paint I couldn't fit the neck into the pocket anymore. That's because there was a thin coat of paint on the sides on the pocket and on the neck right where it joins the body. It also may have caused the wood to swell a bit. In any case, we had to sand the excess paint out of the pocket to finally fit the neck. It was a lot longer and more tedious than I expected, it probably took about an hour and a half before we got the neck to drop into the pocket without forcing it.

Here's the pocket about five minutes into sanding. At that point we were just focusing on that left side.

Image

And here's my guitar tech sanding down the other side. He even had to use a dremel on the side closest to the pickups, since it would be too awkward trying to get the tiny sanding block back there.

Image

Finally, they fit!

Image

Next, we installed the tremolo assembly. This was probably the easiest part of assembly so far. The holes lined up, and everything was really straight forward. It was finished (including soldering the ground) within about fifteen minutes.

Here it is placed without being installed yet, and the pickguard is just there to see how it will look.

The back of the tremolo before adding the claw.

The front with the ground and claw installed.

And the back after the ground and claw were installed.

Image

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) we had about one more hour left to work on it before I had to begin teaching lessons for a teacher who was out of town. The final thing we were able to complete was installing the tuning machines.

The first thing to do was to fit the tuners and remove more excess paint with the dremel tool.

Image

Next, we make sure all the tuners are aligned.

Image

The little feet on the bottom keep the tuning machine in place after holes are drilled for them. Here's a closeup before the holes were drilled.

Image

Next, my tech took a hammer we use to get high frets down and gently tapped the tuners while they were in line so that the feet made little marks in the wood. If you look really closely, you can see them in this picture.

Image

And then it was time for the dremel tool to make another appearance! After we had the ones on the end lined up with each other we took a straight edge (that little ruler), wrapped it in tape and used it as a guide to drill the other holes. My tech did all the work with the dremel tool, I've never handled one before and I'd rather practice on scrap wood than my custom guitar.

Image

It took about an hour, but here's a picture of the installed tuners. The only way they could be better would be if a robot had done it, but I don't think you could tell the difference anyway. Also, a bone nut has been added by the luthier who painted it. I specifically asked for it not to be slotted because that's something I want to watch, and maybe even try, myself.

Image

And here it is awaiting Day 2. The pickguard is just there again to get a better idea of what everything will look like when it comes together. :)

Image

I have Wednesday and Thursday of this week off. So in all likelihood they will be Day 2 and 3 of the assembly.

Gooooood stuff TGS! Can't wait to see the next installments!

Remind me: which pickups had you chosen to put in there? I am sure they will feel comfy in their new home! ;-)

Cheers -
