I haven't forgotten about it. ;) Quite the opposite actually.

I've done a little research and I think I've found a good place to send the body to Ceri from. They do international shipping and make custom sized boxes for what you need to ship. And my parents have used them in past for international shipping when they had their own business. The thing is, it's about forty minutes away and I've been dying to get out there on my Dad's day off for the past couple of weeks (my family just has one car right now, so we have to plan ahead for extra trips anywhere). Things keep happening to prevent it though, like the a/c going out and a massive hard drive failure. My Dad has spent all of his recent days off trying to fix stuff like that. He has another day off tomorrow and the plan is to go send the body right after I get off from work. I'm just going to have to cross my fingers and hope that nothing happens which needs immediate attention between now and tomorrow.

Well, I finally got out to shipping store and got an estimate on the price. It turns out they're telling me it would be $250 from FedEx. That's a lot more than I was originally thinking, it's basically what it would cost to refinish it here. But I haven't given up hope on it yet, I'd still like to try and get it into Ceri's hands. I'm going to get a quote from the regular Post Office about it and if it lands in the under $200 mark, then we should be set.

But I have been asking around here to and in case they still tell me it's going to be $250 or more I have a backup plan. My boss used to work as an apprentice to a luthier in the area. I'm going to try to get a hold of this luthier and ask him about possibly refinishing the body for me, and what it would cost. He usually just sticks to building guitars, not refinishing them, but there's an outside chance he might.

Also, the weather is here is abnormally dry (in fact, it's the hottest, driest summer ever on record so far). I think that if it turns out it has to get done here, I may try to at least strip it. I also talked to some people at work and they basically volunteered their tools if I need to borrow them. Everything I would need to strip and refinish a guitar minus the knowledge and experience. I still can't find anywhere indoors where I'd feel comfortable about doing it, but outside maybe? It's not like it's going to rain.

$250 is way too expensive to ship a bare body. A friend quoted me $300 odd to ship a whole guitar.

Shop around because you definitely want HIS eyes on the details.
If it came to it that $250 was the lowest price. It's worth it to have Ceri give the body his attention. But you knew that anyway.

TGS and I have been discussing this off-Forum. I was saying $250 sounds amazingly high to me. I suspect that's for the service where they wrap the item lovingly in freshly cured cow hide, collect it in a chauffeured limo and fly it across the Atlantic in its own airline seat.

My side of the Pond the regular post office is quoting me about $50 for trans-Atlantic shipping, surface mail (sea rather than air), which of course is slower - but who cares? And I notice US sellers on Ebay mentioning prices such as $67 for sending a Strat body by USPS Express Mail International.

So I believe FedEx's price can be beaten. By a mile.

However. We don't want TGS to feel she's in a corner over this thing - Ceri is hardly the only person in the world who can refin a Strat. So I was also suggesting to her that we could very well find her a reasonably priced guitar finisher somewhere convenient in the US. Any thoughts, guys? She's not looking for over-the-top hotrod paintwork: this is just a simple White Blonde refin in nitro. Gotta be dozens of reputable finishers Forum users can recommend.

Your suggestions, please.

And I was also saying we could very well talk TGS through doing this job for herself, for no more than the cost of a few aerosols of ReRanch nitro. We all remember the excellent work Kong did on his Drowned Strat, straight out the trap. Someone with TGS's smarts and carefulness can easily make a good job of this thing. She's up for splint-filling acoustic soundboards, after all - refinning a Strat is kid's stuff by comparison! :D

Options. Forward to a bright future.

Cheers - C

250??!??!? Goodness gracious! Severe eye-poppage looking at that price!

Uhhh... clicketey-click...

seems reasonable to me. I don't think an unfinished bare body needs to have champagne and a foot massage while on the flight.

Uhh. Well I hope this turns out well. All the best, guys!

Well, today has been the first day in over a week when I could actually stay home and get somethings done. I've had work, gigs, recording, teaching and school pulling me in all different directions lately. I sent an email to the guy who was recommended to me in the area to see about getting a price quote. If he doesn't reply in a few days, or if it's really expensive I'm going to try to ship it again.

My only concern with sending it through regular mail is the horror stories I've heard about how many things they seem to lose. I'm still poking around trying to find the best options though. :)

Sorry guys, I've had a lot going on for the last couple of months.

In July I worked for a rock music camp. It was really cool, but herding kids for eight hours a day, five days a week really knocks you out. lol On the last weekend of July my bands had a couple of gigs in Galveston. It was fun, and Cari (the lead singer) and I got to stay the night in a beach house that her Mom's friend owned. The afternoon of the last gig the guys came over and we decided to go to the beach to kill time before the gig. All I did was roll up my jeans and walk no more than knee deep in the water for 45 minutes. The trouble was, I forgot to put sunscreen on my lower legs and feet. You wouldn't think that would do much, maybe a little tan, but the next day my legs and feet were bright red and I couldn't move without a lot of pain. I even got burned on my face and arms (which I remembered the sunscreen for), but that was more of a regular 1-2 weeks and it's gone sort of burn. Three weeks into it my legs were so swollen I had to see a Doctor and take antibiotics and apply medicated burn cream. I missed two gigs (including a paying blues gig, which is a very rare thing!), a week of work and much of my internet/school time. I've felt a lot better in the last week or so, so I've been getting things back to normal. I also missed about two weeks of playing guitar (the most since I've started) and so I just now feel like I've caught up. The sunburn it still dry, itchy and flaking. But it's just a minor annoyance now.

Anyway, as far as the guitar goes I think I ought to order the neck this week. If I wait any longer, it'll probably be a longer wait because Christmas is coming up. I'm honestly thinking about just going through Warmoth. They have a pretty good reputation. Plus they offer some cool features, especially in choice of wood. I'm leaning a bit towards a kingwood fretboard instead of rosewood. Anyone have any experience with kingwood? I've only ever even heard of it today when I was browsing Warmoth.

I'm actually thinking of selling the body to get another. I could get a lightweight body which already as a contoured neck heel, ready to paint, for about $200 on Warmoth. I should be able to get at least that selling the Eric Johnson body. I think it's just too much work to be worth keeping in my situation. Someone else could be happy playing it as is, without having to repaint it or anything.

I found a local luthier who will be able to paint both the body and neck, and I could stop by whenever I wanted to watch him work on it. One of the advantages of painting the body and neck at the same time would be that a matching headstock would be a possibility... ;) I still want to stick with the white blonde/tortoiseshell/rosewood color scheme. My goal is to have it complete by Christmas.

Good to see your post Texas. Glad that you are feeling better. I've heard only good things about Warmoth, so, looking forward to pic's of your completed guitar project.

Glad you're feeling better.

As for the neck, I have seen some nice Warmoth necks. I've never used Kingwood myself but have read that it is very similar to Pau Ferro. And one thing I do know is that it looks awesome. I also think your plan to start fresh with a new body is a good. It'll save you and the guy doing the finishing a lot of time and headaches I think. Good luck on the project, and be careful in the sun!

Just thought I'd give you guys another update. :) I just sent an email to Warmoth about the body. I've decided to stick with alder and I'm going to try to get one which is as light as it can be without being chambered, has that contoured neck heel and if possible is also one piece. I found a couple in their showcase that had everything going for it but the neck heel, so I'm going to see if I can order one of those and have them add the contoured neck heel. Or if not, see if they can choose a lighter than usual chunk of wood to make it from. I'm hoping for a reply soon, and as soon as I get one I'm going to go ahead and put in the order.

I'm still getting things sorted out with the neck. I'm torn between Warmoth and USACG. There are pros and cons with each. I really just need to sit down with a pen and paper and write my specs out to see which could fit the bill best.

I'm also leaning back towards stainless steel... I'm kind of concerned about the affects on tone but it might be worth it from the standpoint that this is going to be a workhorse of a guitar and that I'll be able to compensate somewhat which tone controls on the amp and guitar. Also, I can't help but remember how incredibly smooth the guitar I played with stainless steel frets felt. No grinding bends. And in the worst case scenario, I could live with them long enough to yank them out and replace them with regular frets once they start to wear.

EDIT: To be clear about the neck, it's not like I'm starting from square one now. I have an extremely clear picture of what I'd like, and in a way that's making it harder. I'm really close to ordering it, probably within the next week if I can.

This quandary of yours is typical when creating something. there is always a point where it can be improved, but that becomes an albatross as the build process grinds to a halt, similar to a glacier moving to Florida...

I found myself in that familiar mode concerning my two Stratopartster build. ( Ironically I am having this scenario with a client on a design build of their back porch rails/steps as well as their front steps as they have changed the design 4 times and now a 5th after the contract was signed. )
So back to the simpler TGS hiccup.... You need to be objective in looking at this.
(1) Is Warmoth able to mill out your neck for less cost than USACG... :?:
(2) Is USCAG able to mill out to the same specs but with a faster turn around time... :?:
I would think they are pretty close in final result and if that is the case than cost and turn around time is the criteria.
" It has been almost a year so you need to get it done.. "

I'm saying this because your 1st paragraph is to the point and moving forward....The 2nd however seems to backtrack quite a bit in re-analysing your decisions.

Forget about the worst case scenario......
This is a build, there are going to be certain qualities in this guitar that you would like to change after playing it for a while.
So since that is an inevitable factor of a Strat-Build, get it built with the specs you have now.. :!: Then you can reassess and design another build with the features that you would like to be different.

This is How I finally got my two Stratopartster's I and II built, I went ahead with the designs once I had all the parts decided. It was a matter of going back to the initial simple plan of what each one was to be which was two completely different sounding Strats.
I am still ecstatic about the Black Strat as it is much more of a powerhouse than either my CS 56 NOS or my MIM with SCN's.
Unfortunately I loaned it out to a constantly gigging friend Mark Cutler, quite a few weeks ago and I have to get it back... Had it been atrocious I would have gotten it back immediately.
Stratopartster II is undergoing a rewiring as there was a glipch in the schematic I followed, otherwise it also was quite a different workhorse.

Consider this, instead of a normal Tone control, try a TBX but with a 220 resistor cap instead of the 82 cap...You may find it will give you the options you are seeking as far as tone parameters.
There was a 2 part article in < http://www.premierguitar.com > on this subject.

So just leave this one as a prototype, play it for a while and then decide which features to change on the next build.....Go As Is.....
