I think it would be great if our esteemed forum members, master builders, and collectors of numerous guitars all got together and supplied our budding young superstar with her perfect guitar (and backup).

What better way to help a young rocker achieve her dreams.

Since I can't build anything myself I would be happy to donate a small monetary contribution to this worthy cause. Perhaps other forum members would do the same.

What do ya think?

You could count me in too. This group can do amazing things when we want to. I'd be excited to see what we come up with!

Hi TGS,

I have a few casual observations for you to consider or disregard, as you see fit. :)

Jazz guitars: I played an old blonde Gibson ES-175 with single coil DeArmonds for years. It sounded great around the house but was very difficult to control with a band. It is a real art to play those things at any volume while controlling the feedback. I knew one guy (one) who was a real expert at it. I also played an ES-330 with chrome P-90's. It was less trouble, but still a pain compared to a solidbody or a "blocked" semi-hollow body like an ES-335. If I had to have something hollow, I would look at an ES-335, L-5S, or Gibson Fusion. Ibanez also makes some quaility product. Personally, I'm glad I am not tempted down that road and will stick with teles and strats.

The neck you are comfortable with has more to do with what you are familiar with than your hand size. I have seen little girls playing P-Bass with very small hands. Also; Google Bill Monroe and look at his completely huge hands playing a tiny mandolin. Not to say you should get a neck you don't like...I just think that any Standard Strat neck is going to work for your hand size.

I will do what I can as well. As mentioned, TME in our neck of the woods in Houston has some pretty good deals and can order any Fender, Charvel, Jackson, PRS, and a few other name brands (funny, no Gibsons), but if you want to contribute pieces and money, I am sure that TGS could build one killer guitar for the ages (and her career). Let me know how to help.

Wow guys, I don't know what to say! Just, wow. I'm kind of blown away right now. :D Just the fact that so many of you would be willing to do that, wow! And Ceri, I think I would be interested in hearing more about those pickups. The current pickups in my MIM are dull and awful, so a replacement would be wonderful!

Well, I talked to my tech about learning to refret, buying tools and everything today. He said that he would teach me to it and that when I needed to refret a guitar I could bring it up to the shop and use his tools to do it for free! Or he said I may end up hating it because there's a lot of tedious work involved (which is why it's so expensive) and that way if I don't like it I haven't wasted any money on tools. He taught me how to level frets today, and that's something I'm going to be doing a lot more of before I move on the the actual refret. He thinks that my first refret should be my MIM Standard since the frets on the Squier and Highway One still have some life in them, but I can't stand to play the MIM at all right now. It I used the MIM as the refret guinea pig, and I had better pickups for it, then it would be done and playable again! He's also going to teach me about the electronics and about how to swap pickups by myself. With that knowledge most of my guitar repairs will be very cheap or free, but the catch is that in exchange for the knowledge I'm going to be more involved with repairs at work. Which is a pretty awesome catch to have in my opinion. :D

I also talked to him about the Highway One. And let me tell first off that I go to him to talk me out of buying guitars. Never once has he ever advised me to get anything I've asked him about. If I have GAS or something I don't need, he tells me. But after he checked out the Highway One and heard the price ($300) he actually thought that it was something I should take advantage of. It has a solid steel block (big upgrade from either of my current Strats) and even though I'm not completely in love with the pickups, I already have Texas Specials. So he thinks I should use it as a guinea pig for learning to change pickups and that refret. So essentially, I'd be getting an American Fender with Texas Specials and jumbo frets for about $308 if you include the cost of fret wire. I think it would make a killer backup if nothing else. The frets also aren't as bad as I initially feared. They're still worn, but not as bad as the Squier and above the 12th fret it's untouched.

He also said that the main thing I should be looking at now is the neck. Finding a neck I really like and really find comfortable. And then settling on a string spacing for both a main and a backup. I've noticed going back and forth from the Squier to the Highway One feels a little awkward, like changing from guitar to bass, because there's a notable different in nut width and string spacing. The strange thing too is that the more I play the wider neck, the more I kind of like that my fingers have more room to move around. The back of the Squier neck feels great, but now the string spacing feels a little cramped. I also strung the Highway One with my current favorite string gauge for a direct comparison. The Highway One has a little more sustain (probably the solid steel block instead of the cheap zinc block) and a different tone, even unplugged. For lack of a better term, it sounds woodier. It has more depth. The pickups are extremely bright though, but I'd be interested to hear it with the Texas Specials.

So anyway, tomorrow I'm going to Guitar Center to have my three to four hour guitar testing bonanza. I'll probably focus the most on necks, since everything else (pickups, body etc.) can be modified, but the neck is the one thing you've got to get right from the start. My tech also suggested that since I'm beginning to like the wider neck to try the SRV Strat again. It comes with everything I want stock, except my only gripe with it was the super fat neck. But I haven't played one for about two years so it's hard to me to think about what it felt like after it's been so long. The G&Ls are something else I'm very curious to try. Everyone I know with a G&L loves them, my Dad even has a G&L bass.

Although honestly the option I'm leaning more towards now is an assembly. Finding various parts (possibly even Custom Shop) and putting it together into the ultimate Strat with everything exactly how I'd like it to be. :D That way I could get the jumbo frets, finish, lefty tremolo, fretboard radius, nut width and pickups all perfect.

Sorry about the incredibly long post. I could take all the posts I've made in the thread and write a book!

Oh and just so everyone knows, none of you have to pitch in if you don't want to. If you really do want to, then cool. But if not, don't feel obligated. I really appreciate just the gesture of you guys wanting to pitch in. :D That in and of itself means a lot to me.

TGS....

Is Guitar Builder working for you to design a Strat but more importantly to save as a preset and post so we can all be on the same page.

I'll begin by mentioning that I have a set of Gotoh's Vintage Tuners in Gold. I cannot envision using them as I prefer a modern style. In addition to style, two of my strats are in Gold hardware, that is enough.

But since it seems ( if I'm guessing correctly ) that you are going for a vintage style (SRV) then those may work for you.

Any one else for Input :?: :?: Ceri :?: Kong :?: :?:

Importantly I also suggest that any parts that you receive be sent to a P.O. Box, not an actual street address.
Since this is a public forum, it is best to keep the Gremlins and Trolls out..

Oh and there is ONE critical requirement... PIcs...Pics...Pics so we all see the project from design to completion...

Sounds like Fun... An International Strat....
