Turns out what's used to fill those holes is just Elmer's wood filler. Nothing which shouldn't be there or that would cause any problems. :)

Hi TGS: thank you for all the nice clear photos. Very helpful! :)

I have mixed feelings about the finish... I'm not sure what he used to refinish it, but it's probably poly and for some reason it still smells like a open can of paint.

You can check what it is quite easily. If you have some nail varnish remover that is essentially acetone. Place a drop of it on the finish somewhere it doesn't matter, such as in the control cavity. If it softens and dissolves the finish then it's nitrocellulose. If not it is a plastic based finish such as polyester or polyurethane.

You'd think I'd have some nail polish remover somewhere, but I can't find it. I'll dig around for it. I'm going into work tomorrow so maybe we keep some in the shop. Although since we don't do refinishing I don't know why it'd be there.

Since you bought this knowing there was work to be done on it I only see one serious issue. I've just been looking back at the thread where this body first made it's appearance and it now strikes me as surprising that the previous owner was most concerned about the back of the heel beneath the neck plate. True, that's an issue - though not to you given the contoured heel you plan to put there. But much more significant to my eye is all that chipping inside the neck pocket. Hmm, we didn't get to see that in the photos previous to your buying it, and that is not so nice. Though one of the previous owner's photos does show that it is not much visible with the neck installed:

I'm bringing it for my tech to see tomorrow. He's extremely good with repairs like this and I have full confidence that if there's a problem, he can take care of it. :) It may take some more time and money, but if it has to do with contouring or fixing chipped wood he can do it. I'm a little more leery about refinishing though, it's a much more daunting task than I originally thought it would be. I've honestly never done any woodworking or refinishing before (unless you count birdhouses in elementary school), so I'm thinking it would be best left to someone with experience. And every place where I was thinking of doing it fell through. Someday when I get a corner of the garage cleared out and I have some spare time and scrap wood I might take a whack at it, but I'd hate to replace one okay job with another.
Quote:
In any case, you're going to do a curved Am Deluxe style corner to the heel, yes? So I'd suggest you have your tech do that and then see how much of the chipping that takes away, and whether what is left seems like a problem or not. If so, then worry not: there is a solution. It's just a little more hassle - but it's fixable! :D

I'm thinking of either doing a Warmoth style neck contour, with the entire heel sloped from the end of the outside of the neck pocket (where your hand would usually make contact) to the body. It uses a standard neck plate, but with shorter screws. I've played several guitars with the American Deluxe, with the more round heel and curved neck plate and they're comfortable as well. I'm leaning towards the Warmoth cut, but I'll talk to my tech about the other way too and we'll go with whichever one we think will work the best for me. :)

I've come of with some non-set-in-stone specs for the bridge and neck.

From USACG http://www.usacustomguitars.com/index.html,
-Headstock style US-2
-Soft V contour
-Thickness around .860 at first fret (identical to my Squier), with a slight taper
-22 Frets
-Somewhere between 40 mm (like my Squier) and 42 mm (like my MIM Standard) nut width
-12" Radius
-Either 6105 fretwire or 6100, from what I understand 6105 is more accurate (narrower) but a little lower than 6100s
-Leaning towards rosewood, but maple is still not totally out of the question
-If rosewood, clay dots. They're a little more expensive but super cool.

I was thinking about shelling out some extra cash for quarter sawn maple like the EJ neck has, but is it something worth the money?

For the bridge I'm leaning towards one from a new Highway One, American Special or Road Worn (I'm going to change out the saddles to Graph Tech ones anyway) since they have wide screw spacing and narrow string spacing and I'm most comfortable with a slightly narrower neck and string which are closer together. It gives me the illusion of bigger hands. Is there a big difference between those bridges and one from a higher end American Fender? And how does a two point bridge from a 50's Classic Players Strat (narrow string spacing I assume) and a two point bridge from an American Standard differ?

Tim's Schaller tuning machines just came in the mail today. :)

Unfortunately I've caught another cold, so I've just been melting my brain watching TV all day. Frustrating, but at least I have a lot if build related things to keep me occupied.

Still surprised those got there so fast. I'm glad I was able to send them on to someone that could use them. I'm looking forward to seeing where this project goes.

Sorry to leave you guys hanging, I've had a lot on my plate in the last week or so.

I feel a lot better now, that last round of sickness was worse than the first one. I didn't even touch a guitar or a computer for several days, and when that happens it's no fun at all. And for the last couple of days I've just been trying to catch up on everything I fell behind on.

There have actually been some major developments in the build in the last week or so.
I took the body to my tech and he looked it over and found a couple of trouble spots. The top isn't sanded and finished evenly and the neck pocket has a couple of issues. The inside of the pocket has some chipping (as you could see in the pictures) and the part that I didn't notice was that the guy sanded too much on the inside side of the lower horn, which took away part of the side of the neck pocket. I also definitely want to get it refinished, whoever did it the first time just didn't do a great job of it. But those issues are going to be placed in good hands. I just don't feel comfortable doing the sanding/woodworking/refinishing myself. I have absolutely no experience in any of those things and I don't have a decent work space either. But all of those issues are going to be worked out by someone much more qualified to do work like this. Ceri was kind enough to take this part of the project under his wing, so my Strat body is going to be taking a trip across the pond as soon as I get a pickguard and tremolo for it. :D

I'm going to place an order for the tremolo tomorrow. I've just been holding out on the pickguard until I've for sure decided on a color for the body. I'm still leaning towards the white blond/tortoise shell/rosewood look. In any case I'm sure it's going to turn out awesome. :)

Awesome stuff for Ceri to be doing the refinishing for you. I'm sure it'll be a top-notch job.
And I think the white blond/tortoise will be a killer combination.

Well, I've been pretty busy (again) this week so I got sidetracked from ordering the parts. Next week is going to be insane with spring break/SXSW going on. I have four gigs next week, three of which are in downtown Austin. One of them is right outside the Austin Convention Center. Inside the Convention Center the Austin Guitar Show will be going on. It's free, and one of my good friends will be one of the guys in there demoing pedals for people so there's no question about me being able to get in or not. I have a feeling it's going to be a bit like dying and going to heaven in there.

But I'm probably not going to get a whole lot of time to do anything other than eat/sleep/guitar this week, so if I don't post for a while y'all will know what's going on. :)

SXSW must be pretty cool this year.
