You know, it did occur to me when I posted "I found a body!" that it sounded kind of weird.

Well, I was browsing the forums the other day when I came across this thread. http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=51036&sid=ddbd82f4dff0c718d293d0993054095d I thought that since the OP mentioned that he wanted to sell the body that it would be worth shooting him a PM about. So in short, I'm getting his old Eric Johnson body for a price I can afford with enough left over for the neck. :D

I may consider a refinish down the line, but for right now I'd just like to see it first and decide from there whether or not to keep the finish. Since the neck heel is messed up already, and it doesn't have the original finish I won't feel bad about creating the contoured neck heel.

My next big step is the bridge. I've been going back and forth on this issue since the idea of a custom guitar first started. I'd like something solid, but I like a little bit narrower string spacing than what's on my pre-upgrade Highway One. The person who originally bought the EJ Strat and sold it to Rich has a Wilkinson bridge assembly like this, http://www.wdmusic.com/wilkinson_5_1_hole_tremolo_steel_block_chrome.html, which he would sell be for $35 shipped (without the tremolo bar, he lost it).

The other thing I was taking into consideration was a wide screw/narrow string bridge like what's found on current Highway Ones and American Specials. I can't seem to find much information on them though. How much narrower is the string spacing compared to a vintage 2 7/32" or the 2 1/16 on my Squier?

The other thing was that I was thinking of a two point tremolo, which would be what's found on American Series guitars. How involved is that mod and is it something that would be worth doing?

I do not think it is too difficult to possibly upgrade to a two point from a six point trem, because if you look in the cavity from the claw side you see that it is routed out below the 6 screws and the 6 screws travel thru a 1 inch thick section of the body.
Question is if there is enough thickness there for drilling out and inserting the posts for the two point.

You probably need to ask Ceri or Xhefri on this one. I have not as of yet attempted this.

The body should get here Wednesday. (And I'll snap some pictures.) I remember now why I hate waiting for gear in the mail. It's torture.

Yeah the waiting, the antisipation the torturous long days and nights, and the sweats nobody tells you about the sweats, thats why all of the builds threads get hijacked with assorted beverages and animals, I'll start :)

In awaiting the next episode, I thought I would do a mini update on my projects. The 2nd Stratopartster is nearing completion. However i now find myself in a quandary as far as the bridge ( TGS  ) application. Yes it is staying as a HardTail set up, however, I have just discovered the new Schaller Hannes bridge off of the LMI website. 8) this will be the upgrade in the coming weeks, first I need to solder up the HSS set up with Mstr V & Mstr (TBX) tone and coil-split switch.
The Fender logo is from a Fender Acoustic sticker, it had to be recut and refitted to my adaptation, the body is a Bullet, the neck is that old J.B. Player that I had refinished, redressed, redrilled.

Had issues on this one, the nut had to be redone, plastic to bone is always a good upgrade

Image

The projects, One Bullet Squier donating neck for one partster and the body (no pulse ) for the other partster.

Image

A few details to dial in and it will be done until I decide to change something.

Image

This one is still a bit away from the finish line as some last minute changes will push the completion date backwards by at least a few weeks, not the least of which is the bridge as well as deciding that those neck dot inlays are going to be replaced by turqoise and abalone nor sure which yet..

A big logo like that should come standard on Fender guitars. That looks sweet Magnatone. Some nice fiddles you got there.

I finally got around to getting everything uploaded. :D I won't attach any pictures so that this page isn't too slow to load. You can view them here, http://s984.photobucket.com/albums/ae324/texasguitarslinger777/.

I could tell right off the bat that this is one nice hunk of wood. It's also really light, only about 3 1/2 pounds. It kind of surprised me when I picked up the package, I wasn't expecting it to feel so light. But for me that's a very, very good thing. I know once the neck, the block and the electronics are installed it'll be heavier but this is a good start.

I have mixed feelings about the finish. I like the natural wood, it's beautiful. But you can tell it's not a professional refinishing job. There are some defects here and there. It's on the thick and sticky side too. I can see that under the finish there are some minor dents in the wood, so my theory is that the original owner probably had chips and dings in the old nitro finish and instead of seeing it as a relic he saw it as a defects and decided to make his guitar all smooth and ding free. It was originally white blond (so in a sense, I did find a white blond body! lol), there are some remnants left on the side of the control pocket. I'm not sure what he used to refinish it, but it's probably poly and for some reason it still smells like a open can of paint. You could probably get high if you stuck your nose too close for too long. Just kidding, but just in case I'm not going to try.

The previous owner also drilled for an 8-hole pickguard and filled in the other holes with some kind of clay. I don't know why, since you can't see those additional holes with the pickguard on but whatever. I'm sure it's something I could fix. The neck pocket is compressed, but I look at it as a head start on my contoured neck heel. The inside of the neck pocket has some of the wood chipping in the corner, is that something I should fix or leave alone? I included some close up pictures of it in the album. The pickguard I used in the album isn't the one I'm going to use. It's a cheap one I bought about a year ago for Hubert Sumlin to sign. He ended up signing my guitar (the Squier) instead, so I used the pickguard to collect the signatures of some other blues artists I like (Bob Margolin and Alan Haynes). But I had an autographed pickguard on my Squier a few years ago and I ended up not wanting to play it for fear of damaging the signatures. So I took it off and I'll never use an autographed pickguard for anything but decoration again.

I also included pics of the body along with Ceri's pickups. :D They're actually American Standards, they're just housed in the CS 69's case.

You can check what it is quite easily. If you have some nail varnish remover that is essentially acetone. Place a drop of it on the finish somewhere it doesn't matter, such as in the control cavity. If it softens and dissolves the finish then it's nitrocellulose. If not it is a plastic based finish such as polyester or polyurethane.

Not that it matters: my understanding is you plan to strip it off and you and/or your tech refinish it, right? If so, careful prepping after stripping the finish will address the dings, so that's fine.

Since you bought this knowing there was work to be done on it I only see one serious issue. I've just been looking back at the thread where this body first made it's appearance and it now strikes me as surprising that the previous owner was most concerned about the back of the heel beneath the neck plate. True, that's an issue - though not to you given the contoured heel you plan to put there. But much more significant to my eye is all that chipping inside the neck pocket. Hmm, we didn't get to see that in the photos previous to your buying it, and that is not so nice. Though one of the previous owner's photos does show that it is not much visible with the neck installed:

http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/4886/img0002sn.jpg

In any case, you're going to do a curved Am Deluxe style corner to the heel, yes? So I'd suggest you have your tech do that and then see how much of the chipping that takes away, and whether what is left seems like a problem or not. If so, then worry not: there is a solution. It's just a little more hassle - but it's fixable! :D

Looking at the grain in your nice pictures I think you have a fundamentally good piece of timber there (as you'd expect on an EJ body) and if it is light in weight as well then that is ideal for you. The rest is down to you and your tech putting in the work, and you're up for that I know. You can get a really good and personal guitar out of this.

So have at it! Excited to see you get started. 8)

Cheers - C
