Here's the page that explains everything about the back contours and thickness. http://www.usacustomguitars.com/contours.htmlquote]

The new American Deluxe necks are compound radius both in the "modern C'' and soft-V versions. Try the feel of the Ernie Ball Axis, and the EVH guitar for an assymetric neck. There's a bit of assymmetry in the SRV neck. As far as the web site is concerned, that's one take on cross-sections of several examples which are available online. The key to the necks described in the lower half of the page is identifying the artists associated with the descriptors. EB assymetric would be Van Halen. The Clapton V-neck is a very distinctive neck carve, unlike any other Fender offers. So is the neck on the '57VHR.

I did manage to play both Deluxe Strats, the SRV, and the Clapton. I've never played an EVH or an Ernie Ball Axis though.

I'm really leaning towards a V like on the EJ Strat. I like V necks, and that one in particular felt really good. I'll shoot them an email and ask them about what the closest thing to that would be. Because there are some subtle differences in every Fender V neck I've played.

From my experience with that guitar its likely their standard 10/56 soft V-neck with a 12 radius. The flatter fretboard is going to account for the difference in the feel between a 7.5 and a 9.5 with the same neck carve. I own a Deluxe VG-Vneck; an '89 Clapton and a new '57VHR and though all are 9.5 radius necks, their V profiles are distinctly different.

Very cool, that body turned out great! Where did you do it, and did you need any special equipment for it?

I've been playing around with Guitar Builder a lot, I'll post some screen shots later. :)

I have a minimalist  shop set up in my basement.
A 4ft x 6ft x 2'' table setup on a pair of those folding plastic sawhorses.
A Ryobi Drill press, Bandsaw and 10" tablesaw, about a $120.00 each
Various handtools, chisels, files, screwdrivers, hand-planes, orbital sanders, a couple of Bosch routers.
A set of Dremel tools, drill and accessories. A few clamps (indispensable ) a lot of various grit sandpaper from 80-60 grit to 600 grit.

That is a simple list of tools, but I had no need for anything special, granted a lot of these tools are part of my work tools arsenal.

Painting the body as well as the neck is not at all difficult and anyone should be able to do this " IF " they are willing to follow a few simple rules.

(1) Most Important is to set up a spraying area with ventilation. A section of my basement is a 6ft by 12 ft by 4ft crawl space set at about waist high.
I set up a spray booth, used my Ridgid 12 gallon wet/dry vac to aspirate the overspray.
The body was a bit of a pain since the previous owner sanded it down ( just the top ) but left the edges square, left the original black color on the sides and back
In addition the top was stained in an oil stain.
That left me no other choice than to sand down the top, sides and back as well as I had to re-contour the edges.
I also plugged all the screw holes except for the bridge screws. final light sanding was with 400 grit.
Then 2 coats of primer, a very light hand sanding to debur. 2 coats of black, each 12 hrs apart. A light hand sanding with 600 grit, followed with 3 more coats at 24 hour interval and the same sanding schedule. For the final 2 coats I sprayed the top, let dry then sprayed the back but at this point instead of spraying the body vertically I sprayed it horizontally.
Final was 4 to 5 coats of clear, also on the same schedule. It is important when spraying to overlap each pass and to spray at a 45 degree angle to the surface being sprayed.
Final paint cure was about a week and a half. I lightly buffed with Meguiar and that was it.

As you can see there is no need for anything special or very expensive, but a mask and paint fumes/vapor overspray must be mitigated, hence the Wet/dry vac. Also overspray tends to dry before landing and thus causes problems so to direct it away from the body is key.

I should add a bit more info, the body was painted with 5 coats of Krylon black and 5 coats of Krylon clear, all from aerosol cans.
The neck was One coat of Minwax Colonial Maple stain rubbed on and 5 coats of Minwax Polycrylic (water based).

Total cost for this project is $300.00. This covers the purchase of the Squier organ donor, the Grover tuners, pots and switches, paints and pup covers.
The rest was 6 weeks of patience and stripping, sanding, painting, redrilling, set-up and etc..etc..

Yes the headstock "Fender Stratopartster " logo is freehand as this whole build was an experiment and I did not feel comfortable with ordering decals ( We all know Why ) to apply.
Either way there are numbers and other hidden ID letters which would prevent this from ever being passed off as a genuine Fender Strat.

There were a couple of minor problems but nothing that wasn't resolved overnight.
The point on a build and to your build " TGS " is to have everything planned out and revised as far as specs and fit prior to assembling.
Believe us when we say that, when something doesn't fit it becomes very time consuming and thus explodes your budget in order to remedy the situation.

Nice work!
I'll have to start shopping for used bodies and necks.

You know, after thinking about it I might go with a body from Warmoth's showcase of bodies already in stock. It's a little bit more expensive than Allparts, but that way I can see the body before buying (I want a transparent finish) and most importantly I'll know how heavy it is too. I'd prefer something on the lighter side, but not so light the neck dives. What would a good compromise be? About 3 1/2-4 pounds? The ideal scenario would be for me to actually go to Allparts since it's in town, and pick a body myself. But I don't really think they'd let me do that, my working for a guitar store privileges may not extend that far.

TGS,

How is the build coming along. Do you have all you need yet? Are there any parts or proceeds needed? Kinda sad to find this thread on page 2. So a two-fold post here:

+3. I'd like to make a small contribution to this project and a list of items still needed would be great.

Well, I've been fighting off a nasty cold which ended up stalling me for a about a week. I'm glad to say that I feel much better now than I did.

Right now I'm basically just trying to make decisions, and get a list of parts needed together. It's funny how one decision affects everything else. String spacing determines what bridge to get and how wide the neck needs to be, I have to decide on a color scheme before I know what pickguard I need, things like that. I'm trying not to rush, because I want to be 100% confident of the specs before I start ordering things.

I think string spacing is my main issue right now. I've been going back and forth between my Squier and Highway One trying to figure out which one I like best. It's kind of hard to compare them since both of their frets are worn pretty bad and the radius is different on each of them. Some things feel better on one, some things feel better on the other, so it's hard to tell. I'm still leaning towards the wider American spacing since I can bend easier without catching the strings next to it by mistake, but I still kind of like the narrower one because I can get my thumb around easier which helps for chords and muting.

One other thing about bridges, I know a lot of people end up replacing their blocks with Callaham blocks. Does it really make that much of a difference? Should I just go with one to start with, or use a regular Fender one?

And I'm still undecided on what to do about finishing the body. My Dad refinished a guitar body when he was in highschool and his advise is to get a professional to do it. I have enough money to get the body and neck, but not to finish them (the only quote I could get locally was $260 minimum for just the body). So he said he and some family members would help me with the cost of that. I do want it to look nice, but I'm not really confident in my own ability to pull it off. I tried painting a Strat pickguard Hendrix style when I was 15 and I ended up ruining it. I don't really know where I could do it either. Unless it was just staining, which seems simple enough.

I have some ideas after playing with guitar builder as far as what it's going to look like goes. I'll post them in a minute and maybe y'all and help me decide. :D

Okay, be patient loading here. :)

This first one has a white/blonde transparent finish, kind of like a Mary Kaye guitar.

And here's a link to the same thing but with a matching headstock.

Same idea as the first one, but with a natural finish.

This is what silverburst would look like on a Strat.

Natural with a maple neck and mint green pickguard. Could also work with a gold anodized pickguard or a parchment pickguard, but I'm posting this one since it would probably be the hardest to visualize.

And finally white with a maple fretboard and mint green pickguard. I was also thinking of the classic white with maple, gold anodized pickguard look but everyone pretty much knows what that looks like already.

This one is definitely my favorite, white with mint green is a classy look.

Hi Tex, my thinking on the block issue is this I've watched a load of vids from the custom shop ME demo's and others I've yet to hear of a callaham bridge being mentioned in any of them, and if prices are comparable I'd go Fender without hesitation JMO, far as the finish goes Tex you know there are folks here that would help you every step of the way should you decide to go DIY

Slverburst would get my vote

You don't want to mention Callaham and Fender in the same breath when Mike Eldred's around. He's already waxed poetic on that topic in these pages in the past. The nature of the verse is not worth repeating, but I'm certain that you get my drift.
