As much as I hate to say it here. I much prefer the idea of buying parts to build a guitar as to buying a new one. It just seems more personal and heartfelt to me.

i'm with nick on this one as well , if you build the guitar of your dreams , you will have a more personal link and feel with the beast , i'm currently getting the parts together for my build and i can't wait till i get them all together (22 fret ,rosewood, 3t/burst and barenuckle irish tour pups)
if you build your guitar , you can sort your guitar if anything goes wrong , it's the best way to go , a c/s for a fraction of the price and it's yours 8) cheers
Alan

Man TGS

Just imagine what it's gonna feel like....
Onstage for the first time, playing a guitar built by you, sponsored by wellwishers???

You'll blow Clapton, Beck or Green away that night.

Erm, so are we not doing it the same way as previously - someone to coordinate matters and see that necessary items arrive without the sordid necessity of TGS having to get her hands dirty herself?

Shouldn't we wait for the final spec sheet, compile a shopping list and then take it from there?

After all, the mechanistic aspects of this thing are much easier now we live in the sunny days of Private Messaging.

But I'll go with the flow...

So Who Will be the " Designated Master Of Ceremonies " :?:
I have not even looked into the PM option yet, I'm still playing with the guitar builder.

As for my own Stratopartster project, I think I'll wait a bit ( until we are underway on this ) before posting my own build thread.
I just read again the Martian Build thread, which of course raised more questions and idea's  for me concerning my projects.

OK.... When is the train leaving the station :?: :?:

For those who have PM'ed, I'll get back with just as soon as I have the people at the business address notified and after I get my Dad on the same page about paypal. I already talked to him about it, and he's cool with it. But I just want to double check to be sure someone doesn't send $10 and it get sucked into something else accidentally.

I also love the idea of incorporating something as tribute to all the donors. Either your real names, screen name, or something like that on the neckplate or backplate would be really cool. :D And I bet Fender Forum Custom Shop stickers would be possible. It would probably have to be a different, Dad-designed logo since I don't think that selling stickers with Fender logos on it is something that we ought to do. We get mad when people do that on ebay. Plus I don't think that y'all would need to worry about paying for something like that. ;)

I'm really glad I went to guitar center today! Unfortunately their Fender selection has never been really great, they just stock up on Standards, new releases, or anything which is an easy seller. I didn't try any of the Custom Shop guitars, they only had about four and none were even close to what I wanted to try. They were all over $3000 too, and I had to be interrogated to try the $2000 Fenders. Okay, well maybe "interrogated" is a little harsh, but I did have to answer a lot of questions. I guess I don't really look like the kind of person with $2000 in my pockets. And just to be fair, after I managed to convince someone to get the first guitar down for me I saw one of my friends who works there and he was very helpful, no questions asked. :)

I tried three Strats. I was planning on trying more but there weren't really any others they had in stock which I was particularly interested in.
The first was an Eric Johnson Strat (Rosewood), the second an American Deluxe V neck, the third an SRV.

The Eric Johnson Strat really surprised me. I spent about half an hour on it and it felt great! It sounded great too. I think it's probably the best Strat I've played in a long time, I really like it. There are a few things I'd like better if they were different, but for the most part I'd like to base my Lounge-O-Caster after it. :D Thanks for the suggestion Solid Body Love Songs, I probably wouldn't have played it since I didn't know it had the soft V and the 12" radius.

The Deluxe V neck was nice, but I'm actually not a big fan of the compound radius. I bend all over the neck, and I play rhythm all over the neck to the idea of having it flatter the higher you isn't really as relevant and practice as I thought it would be. It wouldn't be fun to level the frets on it either. And while it was fairly comfortable, I like the regular 12" radius better. The one thing I did really like about it was that contoured neck heel. That little thing makes a huge difference in playability for me.

The SRV played better than I remembered. I remembered it as having a HUGE neck, but in reality I didn't have any more trouble playing it than anything else. Jumbo frets weren't as big as I thought they were. It seems like I've played Gibsons with bigger frets. And I have to say, after playing with it I'm having some second thoughts on the lefty tremolo. I like it better in that position when I'm actually using it, but it feels a little in the way when I palm mute. And it's seems like I palm mute a little more than I use the tremolo. I don't know, I still like the idea, and I could always take the bar out when I'm palm muting, but that's something I'm not sure about anymore.

Just for the heck of it I checked the used prices of EJ Strats as well as how much the parts were going for. With neck and body alone going for $500 and the pickguard assembly for at least $300, I'm thinking it would be more practical to go custom anyway. That way I get exactly what I want for less than that. The body have be an issue when it comes to finishing though. The only local guy I know of who does that is Ron Pace. And while I've dealt with him before and I'm sure he'd do a superb job, finishing a body starts at $265 and necks are anywhere between $60-90. That's about the same as anywhere else I can find. I've also heard that Rockin' Robin (a guitar store) does some guitar finishing but I haven't been able to confirm that or find a price.

So as far as specifications go, thanks to the Eric Johnson Strat I have a much better idea. I think I'll just list the EJ Strat specs and just comment on anything I'd like different. :) And I'll devote my next post to that only to make it a little easier to read.

Body: Alder
Body Finish: Nitrocellulose Lacquer Body Finish
Neck Shape: Soft "V" Shape
Number of Frets: 22 (instead of 21)
Fret Size: Dunlop 6105 Jumbo, or whatever is tallest (instead of medium jumbo)
Position Inlays: No need for fancy inlays, dots are fine. Cream colored if possible on rosewood. (instead of Pearloid Dot Inlay Position Markers)
Fretboard Radius: 12" Radius (305 mm)
Fretboard: Rosewood (I think I like maple's looks better, but rosewood is more comfortable to me, it's what I'm used to)
Neck Material: Quartersawn Maple
Neck Finish: Nitrocellulose Lacquer Neck Finish (except I like satin better than glossy)
Nut Width: 1.650” (42 mm)
Scale Length: 25.5" (64.8 cm)
Neck Plate: I'll need something compatible with a neck heel contour. (instead of Custom 4 Bolt Neckplate)
Neck Binding: I'd rather not have binding. It's more expensive and while it looks really cool new, thirty years from now it may not. Plus future refrets will be easier without it. (instead of White Fingerboard Binding)
Truss Rod Nut: Original Vintage Style
Pickup Configuration: S/S/S (No need to rout for humbuckers)

Note on pickups:
Bridge Pickup: Specially Voiced Eric Johnson Single-Coil Pickup with Countersunk Mounting Screws
Middle Pickup: Specially Voiced Eric Johnson Single-Coil Pickup with Countersunk Mounting Screws
Neck Pickup: Specially Voiced Eric Johnson Single-Coil Pickup with Countersunk Mounting Screws

While I really liked those a lot, they're kind of pricey since they don't sell them separately. And unfortunately Guitar Center didn't have much selection in the way of guitars without just Standard or Texas Special pups. I might try to find some EJ pickups cheaper, but if I can't then plan B would be something else. Possibly the pickups Ceri has, or Fat 50's since I've heard they have some warmth like Texas Specials but are a little more stratty sounding.

Pickup Switching: 5-Position Blade: Position 1. Bridge Pickup, Position 2. Bridge and Middle Pickup, Position 3. Middle Pickup, Position 4. Middle and Neck Pickup, Position 5. Neck Pickup
Controls: Master Volume, Tone 1. (Neck Pickup), Tone 2. (Bridge Pickup)

I like the controls set up like that. Maybe with the middle also on the same tone pot as the neck, like my Squier has. Tone for the bridge is a must. Although I was playing with an S-1 switch and I kind of liked having that possibility, but it's not something I really have to have. I will have to do some more research on S-1 switches.

Hardware: Nickel/Chrome
Bridge: American Vintage Synchronized Tremolo (with flat, modern saddles if I can find some)
Tuning Machines: Staggered Vintage Style Tuning Machines (I said I wasn't picky about tuning machines, but I really liked these. Haven't checked the prices on them yet though. I really like not needing string trees, that way I can do that "Rivera Paradise" picking behind the nut thing which sounds so cool.)
String Nut: Bone (instead of Synthetic Bone)
Switch Tip: Parchment Switch Tip
Tremolo Arm/Handle: American Vintage Tremolo Arm
Strings: D'Addario 10-52s (instead of Fender® USA Super 250R, NPS, (.010-.046 Gauges)

Unique Features:
Extra Smooth Neck to Headstock Volute (What exactly does that mean? Whatever it is, I must have liked it.)
2-Piece Deep Contoured '57 Style Lightweight Alder Body (Lighter is better, I just don't know if it's something worth spending an extra $99 on.)

Not sure on where to order from when the time comes. I like Warmoth's neck heel contour better, and if I don't go with the lefty tremolo then it doesn't matter if I order from them or bhefner. But bhefner seems like they give you more options all and all, and they do offer nitro finishing. I guess what really matters is how close they come to a Fender soft V as far as the profile goes.

I was wondering, how does the EJ soft V compare to others like the Jimmie Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Road Worn 50's, Classic Player 50's or American Deluxe? I've played all of them before, but for some reason I liked the EJ best.

I was also looking at fret sizes and it looks like 6100s are taller than 6105s. Maybe 6100s are what I'm feeling on the Gibsons. And maybe that's why I was kind of surprised by the SRV's frets seeming so much smaller.

Gosh, I need to get some rest. I have to work tomorrow, but I'm kind of excited right now. Looks like a job for Red Bull. :P (Tomorrow at work that is, not now.)

I second Ceri's opinion - centralize a spec sheet and do a shopping list first.
But as he says, if that's how it goes, I'll go with it.
PM gone. :)

OK, well what we did a previous time was that once we knew the required specs we all shopped around Ebay and other such places for the parts that individual Forum users couldn't supply themselves. Then one designated person made the purchases and arranged with the sellers to send the items to the required address. Then all those who wished to be involved sent their equal shares of the purchase prices to that individual to re-emburse them, using Paypal. So everyone contributed and nobody was left carrying the can disproportionately.

If we want to do it that way again it would mean we should hold off on the Paypal thing till parts have been decided upon and ordered. So we have a final cost to divide equally between us. And we need a designated individual ("MC").

It doesn't have to be done this way, it's just how it worked last time round. And with enough people involved it worked out very affordable for everyone. Nothing to be scared of in that department...

[Deep breath] I'd be so happy to leave it to anyone else who'd like to volunteer. And frankly it might be easier if done by someone on the same continent as TGS.

On the other hand, we don't want this thing to run away messily in different directions, so if required I will step up.

...Anyone else keen to be MC? Huh? Guys?

TGS: specs looking interesting. :) Carry on, people.

Cheers - C

Ceri, while I totally agree with you, I'd say not to limit the paypal contributions. To each his/hers own.
After all, there were talks of different things - a partsocaster, a new guitar (I'd rather support this than a 2nd hand one, unless it's truly exceptional) and a hollowbody/semi-hollow/archtop jazz type of thingie.

And speaking of the latest, rather than an Epi Dot or an Ibanez, I'd rather suggest a Hagstrom Viking or better (I hear good things of the Schecter Corsair, but I have yet to at least hear one).

I really like the way this is going!

And if you could fashion a block inlay with my screen name at the 12th fret it would be great.
