In the age of YouTube and on-demand media, it is impossible to explain the importance that Don Kirshner's Rock Concert held for music fans. There was, literally, no other way to see many of these artists performing live other than seeing an actual concert, which until you were old enough to go (and assuming the band was touring) was not always an option. Rock Concert brought bands into your bedroom and let you watch your heroes playing live. It was an oasis of rock and roll amidst parents, school, responsibilities, and general teenage boredom, and all you had to do was stay up late enough (it aired well after midnight on the east coast) to be a part of it. And Kirshner was definitely a music guy; he had great bands on there, not just whoever had a hit at the time.

Exactly, people now don't realize that you couldn't pull up a video and watch your favorite band....sometimes the only way you knew what they looked like was the picture on the album cover....that big round thing that had music on it. :)
Don brought them to your living room...RIP.

thanks, don- loved the show

many nights at friends house waiting for the show to come on. usually a small tv.

don't remember if these shows were simulcast on fm, but i remember a friend who used to tape simulcast shows on his reel to reel. we didn't have vcr's then. wonder what happened to all those recordings?
