Have you ever felt like a gear geek? While I only have a small amount of gear I manage to keep up to date on gear through guitar mags and forums. There are 7-8 guys who play here at work and seems like I'm the only one who knows anything about gear. "Keeley Fuzz Head, never heard of it." "Who's Analogman?" "Fulltone OCD? I think I saw that in the Musicians Friend catalog."

Anyone else feel like this when talking guitar's?

Yes. I feel that way everytime I go into Guitar Center and talk to someone behind the counter, and I'm not even that much of a gear geek. I've learned that most of the sales dudes behind the counter have no idea about tube types, speaker impedence, and don't know the difference between instrument and speaker cables. All the stuff you would think would be common sense to keep your amp from blowing up.

Glad I am not the only one who has noticed this. Our local music store is staffed by several 18-25 yr old "guitarists" who have little to know knowledge of any of the products they are selling. They will just try to push you on the product of the month or what they have overstock of. Once you ask a technical question or about some specs for the guitar, they go blank and can't even begin to tell you anything about it...from fret size, to kind of pups to neck radius. Always makes you feel good to school one of em about the products they are selling and watch them turn red.

I normally pretend to know less than I do in gear conversations so as not to seem like too much of a geek.

I have always been a gear geek.Even when I was a young teen I knew about all of the gear on the go and knew the specs of all the late 60's Fender guitars and even knew all the Ludwig drum models-the old Ludwig Bluenotes are still my dream drum set of course I wouldn't turn down a set of 60's vintage Hollywoods either.
I still make it a point to read up on all the latest developments in stompboxes and amps etc. but have found trying to keep up with all the different guitar models mind-boggling.

Everyone that knows me knows that I am in fact a gear geek. When I was in school even, all my friends would sneak girlie mags in their backpack. For me it was a couple catalogs; Musician's Friend, SamAsh etc..., and my favorite issues of guitar world. lol. I am a passionate musician, and on the same hand, I am passionate also about guitars, not just the music. I find myself shoo-ing shales people away from me when I'm at the store (especially GC). It's like if I have any questions, I'll ask, but I probably won't have any questions.

Yeah, I kinda do, especially as I only know one person who plays a musical instrument, and that's my guitar tutor. So anytime I mention something guitar related to anyone but him the usual response is "ah, ok. very good" Even then I don't think he is too into gear and stuff, so yes I know the feeling!
