We don't have a record shop of any description where I live. No CD's, no tapes, no nothing. Your solely dependant on Amazon, Itunes or whatever.
There's a shop selling vintage and collectable vinyl and there used to be a record fare that came round. Haven't seen that in four years though.

See that film, The Hills Have Eyes.

Well it's a bit like that. Except it's fenland here and we don't have hills. A sleepy town in south Lincolnshire pop' 35000. Atleast 30% of the population capable of walking on 2 legs and a population combined IQ of 7.

Nah sarcasm aside, there's been some greats from here, if you want a guessing game.
Here's some clues.
Isaac Newton went to school here (in fact my eldest goes to the same school. Something of which I'm incredibly proud)
The first diesel engine was designed and made here.
The Damnbusters and the bouncing bomb were all from here.
The place received more bombing per square mile than London and Coventry combined. During WW2 because of the engineering industry. RAF bases and munitions factories. (Why did they bother rebuilding?).

for me it is just sad to go to the "Blues" section and see how few albums there are there if the store has a Blues section at all.

Organisation wise, anything outside of the rock and pop section in my nearest hmv is a complete shambles.
We also have a second hand record shop, which isn't long opened, and it has a pretty good selection, though no grateful dead, or big brother and the holding company, which is a shame, but they offered to order some in for me.

well to be honest in the uk record shops are pretty crap, they are just usually stocked with the latest flavour so.....I do nearly all of my purchasing online.

It's getting harder and harder to find music stores, period, anymore. Around here, just about all the cd/record stores have disappeared over the last five years or so. This includes both the local independent shops along big chain stores like FYE and Media Play. The only places I can currently go to buy CDs without shopping online are either Bust Buy (whose selection of music seems to be shrinking by the day) or department stores like Target or WalMart. It's a shame because I'm one of apparent minority of people who actually prefer to own CDs over digital downloads -- it looks like I'll soon be doing my music shopping exclusively through Amazon.

There used to be a great record shop in my nearest town that went by the bizarre name of 'The Left-Legged Pineapple'. It closed a few years ago, forced out probably by the arrival of a Virgin store (which ironically was sold to another chain that subsequently went bust). The best thing about the Pineapple was the second-hand section where I could spend ages thumbing through all the CDs trying to find something rare or unusual. Buying online is very convenient but there's a real pleasure to be had browsing through CD racks with nothing specific in mind and leaving the shop with four or five new albums to listen to.

There's a local music store around here that has everything. Hendrix, Cream, Who, Zeppelin. Even lesser known classic bands like Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Grand Funk, Jethro Tull, etc.

It seems that around here the large chain record stores are stocking less and less classic rock whereas our only locally owned shop is catering even more to the classic rock market even bringing in more and more vinyl to fuel the resurgence there is currently in the interest in vinyl.I'm glad that I bought as much vinyl as I could afford(and a lot I couldn't)back in the day as the likelihood of bands like Audience,Gryphon,White Noise and other great groups from the 60s and 70s,getting released again in vinyl or CD,is slim.

Was in the local Best Buy this weekend -- no more Blues CDs and very little Jazz left. :(

In Looney Tunes II last week, searching mostly for Lp's, Cd's are still quite good selection wise, but lately it has been a rediscovery adventure into music I have not listened to in years.

My own collection of 400+ lp's will do that, so unless I'm really in search of something specific, I'm not really buying as much as I used to years ago.

For example, pulled out Silverhead, Les Variations, History of British Blues (double lp) Alexis Corner, Jammin with Edward, Mahogany Rush, Savoy Brown, Chikenshack, 10CC,....
Too many to recall on one post....Did I mention "the Partridge Family"
