Fender has been the standard. Fender Jazz bass is to electric bass, as the Martin D-28 is the Drednought.

 :?: Popular but not the standard. There's plenty of players who don't use Fender. I know a ton myself and out of that, probably 30% have custom built basses. Some use Gibson EBO and Firebird, and I know quite a few Rick players. My current player has Two custom fretless basses and an old Ibanez he really likes. It varies quite a bit. I know a lot more Precision Bass players than Jazz Bass players.

not a bass person but I know what you mean about fender. I have had several guitars by gibson, ibanez, fender etc but fender are the most consistent and feel the best for me to play. I do like gibsons as the mahogany bodies are so warm but fenders are my number one choice. peace

This is the Fender Forum  There's only a handful of us that dare to mention other brands in a good way.

A friend has a Warwick bass. I used it filling in at a gig for him a number of years ago. It is by and far away the best bass i have ever played. Another friend got a bottom of the line Warwick for free, because it's owner thought it was broken. I cleaned the pots, and rewired the output jack for her, and it plays fine. Actually it is quite a bargain for it's price. By that I mean what it retailed for, not free, it's an obscene bargain at free!

I have a Mexi Precision which I really like. But they are worlds apart, the Warwick being a premium instrument, and mine being run of the mill.

My point, we all have favorites, usually Fender here. But like Supro says some of us know and acknowledge there are other fine instruments.

PS I would kill for one of his namesake amps!

When I played bass I tried quite a few. Some Fenders, an Ibanez, couple Gibsons, a Rick , a Tobias, a Smith Burner. Never tried a MagicMan and that's a shame I hear they're pretty good. When I decided I was finally done with bass as a principle instrument and went back to guitar full time I kept one bass to have around. The only bass that ever truly defined the bass for me. My stranded on a desert island bass. The Fender Jazz. If it's good enough for Jaco and Geddy (arguably the two finest bassists the world has ever seen) it's good enough for me. My two cents...

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I always prefered the sound and feel of the Jazz bass over the P-bass,the neck feels more comfortable and to me there is better tonal response and a wider tonal range to the Jazz but my dream bass now is the Jaguar-just a beauty.

Can't go wrong with a Jazz Bass. I've always like them myself. Really though, if I had to choose, the best feeling bass I ever played was an Ibanez. And the best I've owned was a cheapo $150 Samick, well the sound and feel were awesome, but it fell apart rather quickly, I guess that's where the price came into play...lol.

Nah the Jazz Bass is the industry standard, definitely. Certainly the most popular. Comparing a Warwick to a American Standard is off too. Compare the Warwick Thumb to a £3K Fender (firmly CustomShop territory) and tell me it's better, despite the price being the same. A utterly laughable idea. For another £500 you can get a masterbuilt 66 JB (street price).

Compare at price. Or shall we go comparing productionline to top end on every instrument.
