The surf sound was pretty basic. A Fender amp clean, reverb and a strat or jazzmaster. It's not that hard to get.

No, tuning doesn't matter, tone does. You can play surf guitar in Open G or DADGAD if you wish, but why? Standard tuning is fine.

I love surf guitar! It took Dick Dale and Pipeline to get me to like it, but it's really fun to play!

My Dad Played Surf, so some of my first teeth were cut on The Ventures, Duane Eddy and Dick Dale (from records, I never met any of them).

Clean Fender Amp 85-100 watts. Dick Dale would wire three 30 watt heads in series to get 90 watts

The Biggest Fender Reverb Tank you can find. A tube driven Fender Reverb Unit would be Ideal.

Strat, Mustang, Music Man (edit Music Master, not man  ), or Tele on the Bridge Pick-up.

That's the stuff, now for the Player:

Tremelo Picking. Open Fire on your open string with Up and Down strokes on your Low E-String for 30 minutes a day. Take a job with a lot of fore-arm work. Bildge Pumper on a Fishing boat, or Jack hammer Operator.

Pick you're lead lines cleanly and near the saddles. Surf is all about staccato (leave leggato in the Woody for now).

Surf is mostly easy chord changes, but easy stops there. The rythms are exacting and the Melody lines can't be Improvised. Remember, It's mostly instrumental, so the audience has to recognize the song from the lead lines.

Rythms Guitar should Drive the Chord Changes and Compliment the lead guitar with counter melodies when nessisary. Listen to Pipeline or Walk Don't Run. The second guitar is busy, busy, busy.

In the end, Surf is about a good time. Bikinis dancing in the sand. Have fun with it..

It's important to note that Leo Fender had been Pushing his products all ove So-Cal at the time, so Fender was Most Available to the players on the Beach. That, as much as anything, defined the sound.

pretty much what cryingstrat said, i don't play too much but the tone isn't overly hard to achieve... the dick dale videos on the blog were great as well in going along with surf guitar
