Played a few. One common problem with them is the mixture of el84's, Marshall circuitry, and the sometimes boxy Marshall 1x12 configuration. With the combo's.
Unless you turn them way up, they sound a bit thin. But when you turn them up it's magic. Real magic, but very loud.
I think that's half the reason they didn't fare as well as the DSL50 heads. There's little volume difference between the 40 and 50 watts. But the 50 benefits from usually a better speaker cab(your choice) and the traditional el34 valve config'. Keeping it more firmly in Marshall land, sonically.
I really don't think the 401 is a bad sounding amp at all. But it is too much power for something that looks like a home combo. The volume thing coupled with the valve choice makes for a tough customer. The 201 (20watts) is a far better option for a el84 based Marshall.
Or as suggested, shop around for a DSL50 head and give that a try.

hey niki.

i need some marshall tone in the house this yr. its one of my goals.
im not a huge marshall fan but theres times when ya need that tone lol.
i was looking into a Haze, the dsl 401 combo or 50watt head. there is just so many to choose from i honestly dont know where to start. i want a at home and small to med club gig amp. you suggested the 201. that amp doesnt sound even close to the others from what ive heard. ive been listening and watching on youtube, then narrowing down what i want to go looksee at. i like the gain of the haze and 401.
your a marshall guy give me some ideas w/o breaking the bank please.

The 201 and the 401 are exactly the same aside from the lack of 2 el84's (2 on the 201, 4 on the 401) and the output transformer.
Whatever video comparison you're on about is questionable to say the least.

you know as well as i do niki that videos will only give you so much and hardly
a set in stone way to get an opinion on something. it just gives me an idea as to whats out there and a basic idea of the tone. in the 201 video the guys tone sounded very brittle. in the 401 video, that guys tone was spot on and had nice bass and mids.
any other marshalls you can suggest? i like the class5 but it dosnt have the tones im after at this time.

Well that all depends on what sound your after and how much of a obstacle moolah can be. Given your penchant for country sounds, I think you're wasting your own time. For me there is only one Marshall sound and the Class5 has it in spades.

try a jcm 800 it's got gain and best of all a master volume , as always they sound best when turned up loud , butit's nice to play in the house as well , mines is 100 watts and have no probs getting a volume that the nieghbours complain about . they are getting a bit pricey over here but you might find one for a good price and within your budget , cheers
Alan

i dont need 100watts or anything close to it. my carvin X-100 stacks have all the volume i need. im into smaller amps these days. i have a good friend thats been pushing a plexi on me for 2 yrs now lol, volume is the least important to me.
the higher the watts the higher ya gotta turn it up to get the good stuff.
a small 35-40 watt combo will do just fine.

High gain isn't Marshall. It's that simple.

that i can agree with, but, some models have way more gain than others, and those are the ones i want to tap into. i dont want super high gain or i would just keep the 5150.
