You're all killing me. I get the jokes, but com'on ... a little bit of credit for trying to put a decent video together? I know I'm not the greatest guitar player, but i will tell you all ... I constantly strive to create better content. I also invest a huge amt to cover gear, so folks can see & hear. That video is a year & 1/2 old. Let me fill you in on what I've been doing since then. (A) upgraded my video gear, so all video that gets cut in my studio is in HD. (B) Everything now gets mic'd up w/ 3 mic's - a Sennheiser e609, an AT2020 & a Shure SM57. All of the audio is cut, evenly mixed, then matched to the HD shoot. Also, let me remind everyone - I don't get paid by these folks, nor do I work for companies like Guitar World that have a staff of trained professionals to make all the demos better. Trust me - Paul isn't shooting, editing, mixing the audio, etc. He's a hired gun who's a great player. I'm doing everything myself, and passion is what keeps this fun for me. When I read comments like this, it's disheartening to say the least. With that said, there are enough people who do tune into my videos, leave comments, join the webcasts, that get & appreciate what I do, and what I'm about. Hopefully a bit of that passion comes out in this post. BTW - I went to NAMM this year, and had my videos up before anyone else! No one paid me to be there! I took $$ out of my pocket, went to NAMM to cover it for those who (again) tune in & appreciate what I have going on.

Anyway - I know someone out there will rant all over this. Hopefully someone will appreciate it! Either way, it's all I got.

Thanks, and Rock ON!

If you're the real Bro, then, thanks for the wish come true. true story, was watching this video at Michael Kelly's website in 09, recovering from a stroke, third one in as many years, a little frustrated because my face was affected, I couldn't move my face, zombie for real. This video made me smile, I love you Bro, I've been smiling ever since, always wanted to thank you, and so, thankyou.

I might get extremely razzed for this post, but here it goes...

You are a pretty great guitar player, and I have seen a lot of your vids.

I don't have a problem with admitting my playing skills- I'm pretty good, but I'm not a rising Joe Bonamassa, Clapton, etc. I don't feel at all comfortable criticizing other's playing skills, when the next guy can easily come up and outshine me. You also play a lot different than me, so how could it be fair that I weigh in on your skills?

I'm a big fan of all the people on this forum, but ( admit it guys) not all of us are God's gift to guitar.

Kudos to getting yourself out on the tube and for the work you do. 8)

Well TTK, in retrospect I was too harsh, I'm sorry. And yes you do deserve a lot of respect for shelling out and trying to accurately show gear in a home enviroment. Whatever anyone thinks about the results, your motives are pure and you no doubt put a lot of work in.

All I'd really suggest is that you eq your amps to what comes out of pc monitor/stereo speaker/ studio monitor... whatever you use. Reason being that you're hearing the amp, everyone else is hearing some form of smaller speaker. Not a good thing, particularly with high gain sounds.
On your end, in the room. Everything will sound flat and bland. Yet likely sound great via pc monitors or stereo speakers.
Was a big thing for me to get my head round first time I went into a studio. Took me 3 days just to get used to the guitar sound in the room. In the end I ended up playing in the control room, listening to my guitar through the studios monitors. My amp locked away securely in a mic'd booth, where I couldnt hear it.
That was all high gain stuff.

I appreciate your efforts, and it takes some kahunas to do what you are doing, my hats off to you. I'm one that wont make any judgments on gear, based on what I hear or see via the computer.. I will make my own comparisons, and test drive gear "in person".

I guess you have to expect some harsh criticism, after all you cant please everybody.. Just take it with a grain of salt, and keep you tubin' if thats what you want to do.

Maybe some of your harshes critics, should post their own 8)

I appreciate your efforts. We regular joes would never have the opportunity to hear such comparisons without you. I find it hard to be critical over a free public service. Thanks for what you do.

I guess guys like me who have chased tone for over 40 years and know what a good tone sounds like to my ears, can't stand buzzed up,muddied up sounds that are passing for tonal bliss, but I hear the same thing when I walk into a Guitar Center store.
But if it makes you feel good,do it...I'm just not going to listen.
Keep crankin' out the videos guys,I'll pass on watching since I know what I like...and I've gone through the high gain knob turning phase myself.
No harm meant...have a ball.

Just wanted to thank you all for the kind words. And trust me - I tune in on the forums, and am always listening to what folks are saying, to better the things I do going fwd. I look back to my old videos from 2008 and cringe sometimes ;-), so I feel some of the pain, but like most who put effort into doing what they enjoy, I think my content has evolved into something better than what it was. Hopefully next year, it'll be that much better than it is today!

Again, just wanted to drop a note, and thank you all for the kind words & support.

Rock ON!

well this thread took a surprising turn!

Toneking bashing to Toneking loving

I like unbiased reviews, so I thought I would give this site a try
Lots of info on there. The Egnater review wasn't the greatest but I can appreciate the effort

Just wonder if he reviews products that sponsor his site. I notice Line6 ads and Bugera amp ads.

Kind of like watching a Guitar World review. I mean, they are reviewing all the products that advertise in their mag. Knowing that magazine sale all over the world are struggling, I would find it hard to believe a reviewer would bite the hand that feeds

Hey there. Good topic on sponsorship dollars, something I'd be happy to comment on ...

Here is something to think about (from a sponsorship perspective). I ran '30 Pedals in 30 Days' for the month of December 2010 (right before NAMM). This event was sponsored by Line 6, which means they got to pre-roll a 15 second ad, right in front of my videos. IN THE END of the 30 Pedals in 30 Days video marathon - they gave away the product they were advertising (gave back to those who tuned into my videos)!!. Plus, they placed NO resrictions on ANY of the pedal video reviews I did (again, no restriction!, meaning we didn't let ad dollars dictate the content, which is what you find happening in traditional media). Now ask yourself - how great is it, to have a sponsor, and still cut the videos I want to cut, without letting those ad dollars dictate the content? IMO - that is 100% unbiased, and is the right way to run things! I can tell you - most of the pedals I covered, I bought, out of pocket, and most I don't even have relationships with. So, I feel good about taking sponsorship dollars that go right back into the content I cut (videos I produce), to keep it fun, entertaining and filled with the stuff folks are asking for. And seriously, hats off to a company like Line 6 for getting that, b/c from a thought leader perspective, they got a lot more press out of it! In the end, we all won. They got press. I got sponsorship dollars to run '30 Pedals in 30 Days', viewers got to see a new video every day, and got a chance to win something in the end. Kinda makes me feel like Mickey Mouse - putting smiles on peoples faces. Hopefully that answers my approach in working w/ those who choose to sponsor my website. I keep it clean, fun and interactive - the way it should be!!

Just a question, why do you feel the need to crank the gain so high? I appreciate the time and work you put into your stuff, but at least learn how the amp works before posting a review. I know the guy from Guitar World doesn't edit his video reviews, but he takes the time to demonstrate how the controls work and what the outcome could be. Not just cranking the gain and leaving the controls at 12:00.

Love the video's I always check out TTK when I'm looking at buying an amp, never win the stuff though, hahahaha. I always did want to see a Mesa Dual rec against a triple rec though, seems many people can't choose between the two.

anyway keep up the good work!!

Perhaps you are referring to some of my older videos. I think most videos I cut in 2010, I (for the most part) started out at 12:00 (which is unity ... afterall, you need to start somewhere), and work my way up & down on the controls. I think you are generalizing in your statement. BTW -I do this for fun, it's hardly a job for me. Folks that work for magazines or reviewers representing retailers that do demos have a much different MO than I do when I'm cutting my own videos . I'm just sayin'
