I think some perspective may be needed here. I hate to ruin an exciting story but this is my understanding of what happened:

A non-governmental organization that radio stations volontarily sign up to (and can opt out of) indicated that the song was not appropriate and should not be played. Radio stations that belong to this organization cannot play that song and still belong to the organization.

The song is not banned. You can buy the album, you can get it on itunes, you can play it on the kazooo, and ....wait for it....you can even hear it on the radio. All kinds of stations seem to be playing it today.

FWIW, I think the decision is moronic but its not like we are having Brothers in Arms burning parties outside our igloos.

Anyway, who cares about the radio? Is there a more irrelevent medium anymore? I hope they don't tell me I can't recreate the album cover on my loom. :D

I'm willing to be corrected on this. Its my understanding of what has gone down culled from the less sensation parts of the media throwing around words like Banned.

I think this is more silly than outrageous.

I hate that song BTW :)

yes, stations choose to opt into this organization.... the reason?
Because members do not have to deal with the CRTC if there are complaints towards their stations.

There is an understanding with the CRTC (Canadian version of FCC) that if there are complaints received by the CRTC, and the accused station is part of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC), theat the CRTC will allow them to decide if there are in fact contravening any codes.
The plus is that for the most part, contravening the code of conduct for the CBSC standards does not get you monetary fines, where there are fines imposed by the CRTC.

Since the Code of Conduct for the CBSC is very close and similar to the CRTC, this is acceptable to the CRTC, which then alleviates the CRTC from dealing with many insignificant issues.

So ya, stations choose to be a part of the CBSC, but in a way you are kind of strong armed into joining, otherwise you are on your own against the big and bad CRTC for every complaint you get.

For the record, the station mentioned in Halifax Q104 which is going to play the song for an hour, is part of the CBSC.
By contravening the code of conduct, they may have to make a public apology to their listeners

Don't like the song much myself, but if stations and listeners don't voice their disapproval, the airwaves, libraries, bookstores and other media retailers/providers will become a very scary place IMO

Agree with you 100% that stations are strong armed by the CRTC into joining which is ridiculous and my options on the CRTC would certainly be banned. I suspect nobody is going to lose membership over this and radiostations certainly don't seem to be following the direction anyway.

The tale just seems to grow in the telling to the point that all that gets transmitted internationally is Dire Straights Banned on Canadian radio. I just wanted to point out that this was not an action of the Canadian people or the Canadian government. That it was done by a private organization that nobody seems to be listening to anyway.

I don't agree with the banning, I don't agree with ANY banning. But it disturbs me the reactions some people are having. You can't really defend the word $@!&$%, it's a hateful slur, no matter what you want to say. Would people be so defensive of a song that uses the word $@!&#% so frivolously?

I think after 25 years songs should be retired from the radio anyway. You had 25 years to buy the ulbum, if you didn't, you clearly didn't want to hear the song that badly.

Logan's run for music.

I was listening to Jian Ghomeshi's program this A:M on CBC radio and he was saying that the CRTC acted on a "single complaint"that came from Newfoundland of all places and the ban only applies to privately run radio stations and that the CBC is exempt. The"offending" lyric is apparently on the original LP only and even on their Greatest Hits album the edited version is played.

As much as I hate censorship in all it's forms, I can only feel envious of Canadians. It's a crap song, one of Knopflers worst.
Anyway when you can give the world a treatment to stop tumour's growing, I think you can pretty much do as you like.
Aside from my jaded view on the song, take the rest of that with the humour intended.

Look what them Canadian's have done for us all.

Cancer feeds mostly on protein, it's how it strips the weight from it's victims so quickly. It just sucks protein from the body. So developing a cure that is protein based will lead to a magic bullet cure, if anything will.
Big it up Canada. That's a major point in the fight against the big C.

Check your lyric source. You may have your song titles confused. The allegedly 'offensive' line in that song was ..."I think I'm on a losing streak".....and that issue, already been kicked around a bit, did not keep the song from being played.

Hey thanks Nikki. I was beginning to feel bad for being Canadian.

That someone has the power to introduce these ridiculous pc bans is what scares me.
