I started out with a used Peavey Bandit 60, and I stuck with Peavey for a few years, and had some decent amps. Then I went through a Crate phase (what a waste of time that was!). Currently I'm looking for a decent tube amp as all the amps I've had up until now were solid state, cuz I didn't know anything really about tube amps. The gem in the whole lot of amps I've had was definitely my Peavey Renown 400...to bad I blew it up.

Not sure I could name them all, not that there were that many. It was just sooo long ago.

The '60s:
Alamo - non-descript tube amp made in San Antonio, TX, hence the name.
Prestige - solid state, "Made in Japan" when that meant junk.

The '70s:
Ovation Cat System - Black naugahyde covering, high-frequency horns that picked up two-way radio transmissions, 250W !!! I never dimed it 'cuz the windows would break. Sold it to buy a motorcycle after the short-lived band broke up.

Univox - Practice amp with reverb and tremolo. Saw one for sale recently on eBay.

The College Years and Marriage/Family Years - No amp :(

The '80s:
Cheap Ovation solid state practice amp to go with my first Strat.

The '90s:
Divorce, the Big D brings poverty - Stuck with cheap practice amp. :(

The New Millenium:
Condo life and disposable income - Now I'm swimming in small Fenders. Life is good again.

I never realized what my life looked like as seen through my amp choices.

My first amp "Best I could afford at the time"- also I might add, a darned good amp too was a USA made Peavey Classic 20 all tube amp bought in '95. Nice clean tube tone, single channel. For an amp of it's size, it was also pretty heavy.

I used to lug that thing on the school bus along with my Strat every thursday. I had to walk up a very long steep hill to get home after the school bus dropped me off after school, lugging a tube amp, my school pack (with a Vox Wah stuffed inside) and a Strat in a blazing Auckland summer heat- step by step... sweating like a mofo.. that's determination for you. Wish I still had it- they don't make 'em anymore.

I was a bit of a battler in my younger years

First amp a Kent, sounded like playing through a transistor radio. :(
Second a Magnatone 431, sounded great my nephew still has and uses it, but I needed more volume.
Silverface Twin Reverb with JBL's loudest cleanest amp I ever played through, weighs a ton. Takes pedals really well and I always wanted a Twin. Still have it and love it, but it never leaves the house.
Delixe Reverb II with an Electrovoice 12L, when I was still playing out regularly we started miking everything si I didn't need the volume of the twin ( great for my back ) and this was sitting in the store I usually did business with, tried and I've has ever since. That was in 81 or 82  .

My first amp was our home stereo console. I put 1/4 female adapters onto the RCA jacks on the back of the unit and plugged the guitar directly. I put the stereo on the aux input and viola. Of course the sound was not great, and I was severely disappointed that I could not get that heavy over-driven Hendrix sound.

Then I got an actual guitar amp, a Peavy Backstage. It was very loud (compared to the stereo) and it had some cool functions, built in reverb, overdrive channel, and one of the knobs was a push pull for "bright" setting. I lost interest in guitar for a while and sold it.
Mostly it was small cheap practice amps after that on and off for 20 odd years.

In 2008 I got a Spiderjam from line6. It was the most I had ever paid for an amp, and it has a ton of features, effects, built in recording, and best of all some really good backing tracks built right in. My playing began to progress much more rapidly, with the help of the tracks. I am really happy with the amp.

I joined the forums around the same time and started to see all the discussion about tube amps. I was very curious, but as I understood it, they need to be cranked a bit to sound good. For some reason I am extremely shy about my playing. I am not afraid to share a recording, but I find it tough to play with strangers in the room. I end up being timid and not really seeing what an amp can do. I also live in a condo so my opportunities to really enjoy a tube amp are limited.

I did get a Valve Jr on Craigslist (head and cab) for cheap and I liked it, but was underwhelmed. I bought the Bitmo mods for it and what a difference, I also built an attenuator, so now I play it all the time and really love the tone of the thing. I would not give up my Spiderjam though for all it's features. One of these days I'll get a higher end tube amp. I'm also reading books on tube amps and considering building my own. For some reason I think I want to build an 18 watt amp. I also got a Carlsbro 90W solid state amp from the 80s for free and the thing sounds absolutely beautiful when playing clean.

I've owned about fifty Fender amps over the years -- virtually every blackface and silverface model originally designed by Leo except for the Vibroverb and the non-Vib Champ. I took a few side trips to "Sunnsville" (Sceptre), "Voxberg" (Super Beatle), and "Marshallshire" (Super Lead Plexi). But I always seem to return to Fender. Which is where I shall remain until I no longer have need of an amp.

My journey has been very similiar. My Sunn's were 2000S and Coliseum and even had a HiWatt for awhile too, but kept coming back to the Fenders.

My first amp was a Marshall MG15, and considering I've only been playing for a year it's still the only amp I own.

I hate it. I want a different amp ASAP.
