This would be an interesting thread, Personal Amp evolution and why ??

Exactly cos there are amp choices for every style of music. Infact nearly as many choices as there are guitarists now everybody seems to be modding their amp. It's unreasonable to expect a single amp to excell at everything. I'll even go as far as to say that marketing amps as such scupper the success of the amp in some cases. There's no shame in making a amp fit for a single purpose. Just don't try to pass it off as something it's not.

The more bells and whistles I see on amps and gadgets to immitate your favorite player fill in the blank ___________ the less I'm thrilled about what I hear.
The emphasis should always be: Guitar to clean amp, no effects. If you can play what you want on a clean setting than you can add the effects if you wish, but the old adage of
" Garbage In, Garbage Out " is so prevalent today.
I guess I would describe it as " I gotta have it down yesterday "

Hmmm..... Reminds of a quote " Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols "

Do your overdrive with a pedal and get the Deluxe Reverb. The Tiny Terror is okay but king of a one trick pony with not a lot of headroom. Or possibly check out the Egnater Tweaker, Rebel 20 or Jet City has a nice 20 watter that will leave you some cash for a reverb pedal. Blues Jrs still seem to have some reliability and heat related tube issues as well as some of the other HRD series amps. The DRRI is a well built professional quality amp that should last you a long time.

The Tiny Terror is a great little amp. If you buy one, look around 2nd hand and try and get a Korean made one - a lot of people think they sound better; I had a Korean head and a Chinese combo and the head was WAY better but the combo had a greenback speaker whereas the head was connected to a Vintage 30. That's gonna account for quite a bit but my suspicion is that not ALL of it.

Korean Tiny Terror head and Vintage 30 loaded cab, man, you won't regret it.

I have not had any problem with my Black and Tan HRD ( limited edition Sam Ash ) since I bought it 1-1/2 years ago. As for the Blues Junior (tweed) I have not heard anyone have heat issues. This is of course based on the fact that I only know of 5 people who have them, so it depends.
As in the past I always suspect that oftentimes Amp issues are due to mishandling and abuse, Yes I understand that we would all like them to be invincible but they are circuits, tubes and speakers made from plastic, metal, paper and glass parts.
Amps have never reacted well to bouncing around, let alone being fired up when cold, left in the van where the temp is 30-40 degrees F and then brought in to a 65-70 degree F hall and not left to acclimate.
I myself get very cranky under those conditions

The Hot Rod Deluxe III is a nice amp, that I think sounds great. It can definitely handle gigs with a drummer. It has nice overdrive, and reverb as well so you'd be set.

I agree. Without pedals, you will appreciate the Hot Rod Dlx's channel switching.

any solid state would be a downgrade from what i have now, a peavey vypyr. great amp, but it just feels like its missing something....

my set up right now guitar > ds-2 > sovtek big muff > JC95 wah > sovtek small stone > small clone > amp
the reason i cant just use one of my two distortion pedals for overdrive is because i need to use both to get my distorted tone, with the big muff at full sustain (A LOT of distortion) and the ds-2 at about 0 distortion (any higher and i get the most ungodly, unpleasant squealing feedback ive ever heard), which provides very little overdrive.

right now i am leaning closer to the tiny terror because i just love the tone, but ill probably be testing them both out with my pedals saturday.

If your mind is made up on the Orange, then get the Orange.
How much would you use reverb anyway? Delay I could understand, but not reverb for what you want to play. It's a subtle effect that gets easily lost by the kind of gain your going to use.
Or people use too much to compensate for not hearing it as well as they would on a cleanish piece played slow. And end up weakening their sound.

That was me, but it was thinking economically from a 14 yr old's perspective.
I can't imagine having the $600 for the amp at that age...

Like I said earlier though, Orange make terriffic products and I swear by them.

Yea I do WANT reverb, but I don't actually need it and could definitely make due without it for the tone that orange gets. If I decide I really need it for one reason or another, I could just find a used reverb pedal.

But once again, I'm going to test both with my distortion pedals probably on saturday.... That will be what decides for sure. 8)

I agree. Get the Orange, and save up for a reverb pedal.
