After over 40 years of playing I still can't fingerpick worth squat,I,ve tried and tried but can't get my right hand to cooperate one bit. Some of the best singer/fingerpickers are Bruce Cockburn,Donovan and Elliott Smith you should give their stuff a listen, especially the early Cockburn and Donovan all of Elliott Smith's picking was brilliant.

I find that if I play at half speed when I'm first learning or writing a song that involves fingerpicking, it helps me to get more comfortable with the mechanics of playing that patern and makes it much easier once I speed it up. I also will stay on one chord and pick the same pattern over and over using all 5 fingers and getting comfortable with it. All in all, the more you practice it the better you'll get at it. Good Luck.

In another thread similar to this one I posted that I want to learn the " Chicken Pickin " style. But for some reason I can`t distinguish which fingers to use on which strings. I`m going to find an instructor, I think that`ll be my best bet.

This will take you in another vein of playing, but I've found that playing Classical guitar has been extremely beneficial.
The required pedagogy demands a reassessment of posture, instrument positioning and readaptation. However it is well worth the effort since it leads easily into playing music in the style of Al Petteway, Laurence Juber, Peppino D'Agostino, Pierre Bensusan, Stefan Grossman, John Renbourn, etc...etc...

It does take practice like everything and as the old cliche goes, start slow then speed up. There are loads of lessons on youtube for almost anything you can think of. I use it alot to learn different techniques and stuff. Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the replies guys, I guess Ill just have to keep practicing. So far in my journey of learning this beast, finger style seems to be the toughest :)

I've been using the Hal Leonard Introduction to Classical Guitar book for about 2 months or so.

Like anything, gotta start slow and move ahead as skill is developed.

Don't use the little finger at all, unless you're developing your own style.

Lindsay Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac sure can play.
