Now this gets more interesting. After taking a turn playing through Mark Knopfler's custom Soldanos Eric had Pete Cornish build him this rig. Two customised Soldanos, a very serious set of rack effects and accessories all pumped through two Marshall cabs. This is Clapton's full stage rig from the late '80s to early '90s and (so the info card said) allowed him to recreate his studio sound of the period complete on stage without need of extra FX added at the desk:

Controlled from this Pete Cornish built pedal unit:

Holy David Gilmour, Batman!!!! Wasn't our great unanswered question with respect to Clapton's tone, a matter of how his amps were EQ'd. After looking at this, is all still really in the hands?????........is it :?: .....Bunkie :!:

Righto, round two. Let's get to the meat...

Yesterday I showed you this row of glass cases:

Image

Let's look inside a few of them:

Image

Some custom built Martins on the left and a couple of Takemines. The latter are estimated around $1000, the former... a lot more.

These are nice:

Image

Can't even remember what this is on the right. Handmade for Eric by... someone or other:

Image

What is that in the upper left corner? Let's have a closer look:

Image

Bizarro! In fact it is a 1979 Sound Instruments Sonica analog synthesiser - no strings. Now we know.

Plenty of nice archtops to be found scattered around. These Guilds are pretty:

Image

And this 339 Gib on the left is one of my faves from the collection:

Image

Someone here will know more about those amps than me. And that takes us nicely on to some of the other more unusual amps to be found here. This is a mid-'60s Supro on top of a 1970 Gibson LP-2 cab:

Image

A Sovtek Tube Midget 50H:

Image

A 1980 Mitchell Mighty Midget:

Image

A Pignose. They started making these in 1973; this one is from 1974:

Image

And some Musicmen. Musicmans. Musicpeople. Er...:

Image

And in this case is an amp used during the Cream Reunion shows in London and New York in 2005:

Image

Also seen there is Clapton's Versaci stage suit from the '90s. You too can own - and even wear! - some of the great man's clothes. That's where it seriously crosses the line to my mind. Too creepy!

Also in that glass case is yet another of the many black Strats to be seen in this show. That one was also made for the Cream Reunion gigs, by Mark Kendrick of the Custom Shop. They want $20,000 - 30,000 for it. On the plus side, it has a nice curly birdseye neck:

Image

A couple of Eric's famous friends have donated items to this charity fundraising auction. Jeff Beck has given his Fender replica of his '54 Esquire, accurate to the last scratch:

Image

And as spotted yesterday, Joe Bonamassa is offloading his Gold Sparkle Strat:

Image

In reply to danny-79, the story is that Fender did a copy of that Strat but issued it without consulting or even crediting Joe. That normally mild mannered gentleman (I've met him briefly and he was charming) was so pissed off about it he never played a Fender again and switched to Musicman for his twangy sounds. Draw your own conclusions about the rights and wrongs of that one...

Before BlackCatBone asks, they are looking for $12,000 - 18,000 for the Gold Strat, complete with case.

I have the honor to be spottable near the stage in the DVD of Joe's Royal Albert Hall show in 2009. That night Eric Clapton came on and did a number with him. This is the Sonic Blue Strat he played that time - hey, another day, another Strat:

Image

Forgot to check the estimate on that one. Never mind, I have a pale blue Strat already...

By the way, for those of us (including me) who like to give out about how lowering your pickups near to the pickguard can be good for tone, it was interesting to note that all of Eric's Strats had the pups set just about as high as they could go. Strokes for folks...

Don't know how you feel about these Saint Blues things:

Image

The guy there was busy attaching barcodes to everything prior to it all being shipped across the Atlantic. He was getting frustrated with how many items he had to do.

Seems everyone and their dog are falling over themselves to build custom guitars for Eric Clapton. This is a 2006 Peter Jurkovic & Stefan Milkov S-Type:

Image

And beside it a 2007 Moollon Narcis Dragon:

Image

And behind them a 2005 RKS Ocean Pearl, given to Eric by Dave Mason at the RAH in that year. They want $1200 - 1800 for this. How much are they new?:

Image

Here is a Zemaitis of very sober appearance by the standards of that gentleman's work. And next to it a Cream Reunion 335:

Image

This is the bargain basement corner. I had to keep reminding myself that I wasn't in a guitar shop and couldn't just pick things up and have a strum:

Image

Amongst those a 1998 Michael Rowan:

Image

A 1984 Steve Ripley Stereo Six String. What a lot of controls!:

Image

And for one dyslexic moment I thought this said "To Ceri" on it and was all set to bid the $450 - 650 estimate. Of course, it says "To Eric" - bah, I can't do anagrams! It is a 2008 Jay Turser JT200BK:

Image

For the brave at heart, here is an early 2000s Floyd Rose Redmond Series Model 3. If you can stand the headstock they are opening the bidding at $300 - 500, which seems about right:

Image

These are more my taste:

Image

But in the end I'd happily settle for any of these:

Image

And there ya go. The show travels to Bonhams in Los Angeles 18-20 February and New York 5-9 March, with the auction being held on the last day of that outing. The catalog isn't printed yet but will be along in a few weeks. Bid early, bid often!

That's all, folks - C

Thanks for posting all the delicious pix Ceri,I dined under a graphite Eric Clapton Strat in the Hard Rock Cafe in Montreal in '97.When we went in I told the waiter I was a guitarist and wanted to sit by a famous guitar so he led us to the Clapton Strat but I wasn't allowed to take it down and play it so I just had to settle for getting my pic taken touching it with great reverence. If I had a scanner I would post the pic-maybe some day.

Sir Ceri, thanks.

And you may have saved me a grand or so for the travel costs to NYC, or cost me a couple more are there seem to be a few items mere mortals could afford. Unfortunately there's a month to go for me to debate this in my noggin.

thanks again

Yes, it's the potential affordability of some items that's the problem, isn't it? Rather than the complete unaffordability of others.

Hopefully the estimates are wildly low and the things that caught my eye will soar away into the sky and I won't have to agonise over them. Still, when all's said and done, this stuff is just Ebay for millionaires, right?

Cheers - C

PS: I do like that ES-339, regardless who's hands it has previously sat in...

Gilmour's famous "Black Strat" suffered a similar ignominious service for a period of ten years until Phil Taylor requested it back from them. It was returned in a deplorable state and he didn't have to be pushed too hard to advised them of that in writing. This is all documented in his book on the guitar. An interesting read if you don't already have it. Second edition, hard cover, is a must.

Man this is too cool! 8)

Ceri, Stella job mate, the pic's are awesome! Lots of lovely stuff to comment on but for me, this one caught my interest slightly more than others.....

Image

You don't see many Ripley's these days! I can't remember the maker but I believe there is a 6 channel hexaphonic pickup in the bridge. The six small knobs are for stereo panning for each individual string. Possibly got some synth a access in there too.

Lots of fun! :D

Thanks again Mr C, Top Stuff!

Andy
