Probably best to go and try them all TGS, went on the hunt a while back for one, opted for an epi sheriton got to say though build quality on a couple I tried previous not impressed with " crooked necks" went through a few models before choosing the sheriton...gibby's, Ibanez etc, the sheri felt as good if not better than the gibby, thing is though nothing I tried feels like a Strat maple neck and now the epi is neglected in the corner of the room, if only you could get a jazz box with a strat neck, or maybe get some fat 50 pickups they sound sorta mellow jazzy type pickups that would maybe get that sound don't know to be honest sound good to me though, a bit of reverb, treble down bass up.................nice :) best of luck with your search.

I don't know if I'm saying something crazy but, could a Fender Classic '72 Telecaster Thinline be OK for Jazz?

Hollowbody, humbuckers, small (more confortable to me...), good price,...

And so cool!

That's pretty much what a Fender Coronado is. Same scale length as a Strat too.

I actually have Texas Specials in my Strat, and with bass up and tone turned down I can fake the tone fairly well. Thing is, it's not only the tone I'm after. My Strat is my main instrument, I use it for everything. So I can't slap a set of flatwound .13s or .14s on it and continue playing it on my rock and blues gigs. I want something completely set up and devoted to jazz. Something I physically can't play anything else on.

It's probably going to be a little further down the road though. I want to take some jazz courses in college, but I won't be enrolled for another six months and it may be all math and english and no guitar at first. That's kind of what it'll be for. I'd hate to show up to meet a jazz professor with my purple Squier Strat.

 slaps forehead, the Coronado  don't see many of them about TGS also out your price range, interesting that they compare it to a Hagstrom Viking one I've never tried maybe worth a look at, some on ebay under $400 new .
as for the jazz prof, as long as you call him Cat and wear a purple hat you'll be cool :)

Hi Texas!

my recommendation would be the Vintage VSA 850. Comes in translucent orange or gloss white, fully solid maple / rosewood construction, great hardware (all Wilkinson parts as far as I know) and can handle anything from jazz to raunchy-crunchy bluesrock.

Possible drawbacks: It's quite heavy, and I don't know the US street price. In the UK it goes for around 450 pounds, in Germany it's more like 1000 Euros and in Australia I saw prices from Aus$ 1399 to 1699. So who knows where the US price is.

BUT it is a mighty fine guitar in tradition of a very well-known Gretsch model. I love mine!

Cheers

Nutter

If I were you I would get on the phone with this guy immediately and convince him to ship to you. for $600 you wont find a better jazz guitar regardless of what else get suggested. This is a $1200-1400 jazz box under most circumstances.

Unfortunately $600 is still out of my price range right now, but that's a great deal. I'm not really in a hurry with this, so maybe if I keep my eyes open something will show up at the right time. I once met two separate people on the same day at the shop who both had just sold their Coronado's for $500. One was a Wildwood. If either had come in and said that just a few days before I would own a Coronado right now.

I played a Harmony Rocket (reissue, 335 type) in Austin last time I was there. It belonged to the sound guy and he let me jam on it for a while. It was actually fairly close to a Coronado. I had forgotten about it until just now.

And again, thanks for all the suggestions guys. It really helps, a lot of those guitars I hadn't heard of up until now. :)

Well, I've been getting into a lot of jazz lately and I'm really digging the warm hollowbody/semi-hollowbody sound. I've wanted a Fender Coronado for a long time but it doesn't look the financial situation is going to pan out to allow for that any time soon. I don't really know very much about hollowbody/semi-hollowbody guitars, I'm more of a Strat freak. I've heard Ibanez Artcores are really good for the price. What are some other good ones in the under $500 range?

"Jazz" I would look at the Gretsch for big band styles. Semi-hollowbody won't get the big band sound; the semi-hollowbody is more Larry Carlton or Lee Ritenour jazz. Interesting thing about the hollow body guitars--they make great rock and roll guitars, too. Check out Steve Howe of Yes ES-175; Pete Townsend (Gretsch on Who's Next I think), Ted Nugent used a big box guitar, too. Doesn't M. Young of AC/DC play a semi-hollow? Lots of classic rock played with those semi-hollowbodies.

Pete Townshend played a Gretsch 6120 Chet Atkins model. It was used on Who's Next and Quadrophenia. Its final moments can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Qv6QTrWXN4

I'm amazed and inspired that so many semi-hollows are available in that price range.

My mouth is watering.

blackcatbone: That DeArmond looks incredible.
