Well, I've been getting into a lot of jazz lately and I'm really digging the warm hollowbody/semi-hollowbody sound. I've wanted a Fender Coronado for a long time but it doesn't look the financial situation is going to pan out to allow for that any time soon. I don't really know very much about hollowbody/semi-hollowbody guitars, I'm more of a Strat freak. I've heard Ibanez Artcores are really good for the price. What are some other good ones in the under $500 range?

In that price range I'd say Epiphones are just about unbeatable. They have several nice models, and personally I love the ES-175 reissue. On top of great sound they look killer as well, and they are built well as is typically the case with Epiphone. The Artcore looks like a nice guitar, but I've got no experience with 'em. You never know what you might find used somewhere, my local music shop has several nice used hollowbodies around the $500 mark. Good Luck.

A Barney Kessel or a Barney Kessel custom if possible Texas. I wasn't able to stop playing it for as long as it was in my possession, about a month later my lead guitar player took it back.

A hollow or semi is on my list as well.

I believe Gretch has some less expensive ones, would these work for jazz?

I own a Gretsch 5120. It is the Korean version of the 6120. Interesting Jazz sound but feels funny to play to this Fender guy. Bought it new for< $700. Very well made and stable plus a nice Bigsby

Go for a DeArmond Starfire or Starfire Special. Hollow body, with or without Bigsby and will come with either US made Dynasonic pups or US made Goldtone humbuckers.

If you want something a little bit bigger bodied go for a DeArmond X-135 or X-155

Both these guitars are Korean made copies of the Guild Starfire and X series jazz guitar. Very high quality, nicely finished and you should be able to find one for $500 or less. These guitars are very hard to beat in this price range especially with the US made pups.

You can't really go wrong with Epiphone IMO. Happy hunting!

Hi Texas, try this.

Not too bad. But I can understand the crave for a hollow body. I'm not a huge jazz player myself because I lack the skills, but I had to have a Gretsch 5120.

Good luck. :)

As soon as I saw your jazz axe heading the Ibanez Artcore came to my mind right away, they are making a great name for themselves for being bona fide jazz boxes. The big bodied Epiphones are also great guitars especially the Byrdland,Broadway and Emperor. The Emperor II Joe Pass model is a smaller bodied version and would probably be more comfortable for someone of smaller stature.

Being a jazzy guy myself I would look at Epiphones, especially the Epiphone Emperor Regent. Also great guitars are D'Angelicos, but they're a little bit more pricey.

Lots of interesting guitars, thanks! :)

I think that one of these days I'm going to head over to Guitar Center and play every hollowbody there. :P That's probably the best way to get a feel for them.

TGS the Epiphone Dot is a good jazz box for the money. You can usually pick one up used for $300.00 or so. the Gretsch 5120, 5122 or Ibanez Artcore aren't bad either.
