well, I fell in love the first time I seen a jazzmaster...the VENTURES!!!! I have a 62 $@! reissue. I just love the overall feel of the guitar: love the way the neck feels in my hands, the control layout (volume position), the swing of the trem arm and trem lock is a nifty feature. I play in the neck pup position, with a slight tone variation (another cool feature of the dual circuits). The body is very comfortable in my opinion. I say check em out dude, I'm thinking about getting the new blacktop sunburst jazz!

For me, the attraction was the offset body, it hangs more to the rear. That and it has a very distinctive tremolo sound.
The tone circuit is unique, you can set two completely different volume and tone levels to switch from rhythm to lead quickly.
But the downside in the bridge. it floats and make intonation near impossible and because of how far back the string mount on the tremolo, the strings are easy to get to jump off the saddles if you strum too hard.

There is an aftermarket product called a Whosit, it's a bar that mounts to the front tremolo screws and you thread the strings under it to give it better down force to keep the strings in the saddle, I fine it helped with the tone as well.
Using an aftermarket Gibson roller type bridge in place of that floating fender nightmare will correct the intonation issue.

I sold mine and after I fixed it all right to get a Les Paul, wish I had kept it, but hind sight is always 20/20.

yeah, I had the same problem with strings popping off the bridge, I just filed a larger groove in the saddle. And I have absolutely no trouble with the intonation, just take some time adjusting the spring screw on the bridge plate. I play alot of rock and roll, blues, and yes surf. Hell, I even played a few metallica covers for giggles, and this guitar pretty much plays itself, I just hold it up and look cool behind her.

I have a 2008 Classic Player Jazzmaster Special. I love it.

It does indeed have a great tone for surf, but it's much more versatile than that. It's very respectable as a blues guitar, and it's great with some gain on it for a nice punk tone. In fact, I've named it "Sheena" after the Ramones song.

I find the Jazzmaster's body contours more comfortable than those on the Strat. All in all, it's a very cool guitar. Check it out! 8)

Hi WayCool, why don't you just go to a music store and try one out? You'll most likely hear any possible opinion on here... :?:

Anyway. I would say the Jazzmaster can't possibly be put into any particular category, and is a very fine instrument in itself. The fact that it was used by a lot of punk/grunge outfits is... well, probably the price! Cheaper than a Strat, and makes a statement visually and sonically. Just my 2 p.

If you wanna know what kind of sounds you can tickle out of a Jazzmaster, you should check out this guy, Wilco lead guitarist Nels Cline. There's lots of his work on youtube, but I guess this video shows, that even within the Jazzmaster field there's great diversity. Check it out and happy hunting should you get the Jazzmaster bug! 8)

Cheers

Nutter
