I've never found a good deal at a pawn shop==even cheap stuff is overpriced.
But for Fenders?

Maybe a Lead I, II or III?

Maybe.

Or a Katana?

Not really vintage though.

The internet is the pawn shop of the 21st century. I'd almost go as far as guaranteeing that you're not gonna find any better deals at a pawn shop than you can online. And if you look hard enough you can find pretty much anything on the internet. If you're dead set on the pawn shop scene, you really have to dig through lots of crappy guitars to find one that's decent, and then you're not likely to find a vintage guitar either.

Lead's are nice. I want a Lead I=\ Just because it's what Johnny Ramone used on some awesome 80s stuff like "We Want the Airwaves", "Not My Place(In the 9 to 5 World)" and "Bonzo Goes to Bitburgh"

agreed tim. thing is with the pawn shops, you can pretty much know what you have
the very moment you see it. with the net rip offs are way more possible.
finding a vintage is rare in a pawn situation, but, if you have a hook up and established yourself well with the local pawn guys, you might just get a call when something worth having does come through the door.

Definitely being able to ge right then and pick up the guitar is a little safer than online shopping, but if you're carefull you can usually get by online without getting ripped off. Probably a lot of nice stuff making it's way through pawn shops, and it'd definitely be cook to be the guy at the top of their list when they need to off load an all original mint condition vintage axe. I certainly know no pawn shop owners though...Guess I gotta do some more networking...lol.

networking is key tim lol for sure.
you'll start off being "that dude", then you'll go to "you know, that one guy..."
then you'll be known as "call tim and see if hes interested in this" lol.

I'm kinda spoiled being here in Vegas. pawn shops out here have killer deals all over the place. When it comes to familiar high end stuff, you most likely won't find a great deal on it. But if something is unfamiliar to a pawn shop (for instance, I once bought 2 vintage Matsumoku guitars for $150 each) they just want to move them, and slap a low price on it.

There are pawn shops here that don't have too many knowledgeable people working in them. They only know how to price what they find in a blue book or ebay search. They can only decipher models and makes. If they see a Squier, they price it as such not taking into account whether at has Duncans or DiMarzios in it, or other aftermarket custom parts. If I see one for $60, and it has 3- Duncans in it, I'll buy it just for the pickups, then decide what to do with the guitar afterward. Either part it out, or use it for gigging.

The difference between a Pawn Shop and the internet is, at a Pawn Shop you can physically inspect it yourself. People on the internet can and sometimes will lie, misrepresent, or just play dumb as to the shape a guitar is in just to sell it. Simply going by pictures and a description can be a risky venture.

- Creep

I go to several pawn shops every week and have never seen any vintage Fender equipment. However I must say, i had aquired a Vintage Gibson Les Paul and a Vintage Fender Champ back in the early 80s for real cheep. But back then they were not considered Vintage.

That's SOP today but years ago there were still bargains to be "mined". I recollect seeing vintage Strats, J-Masters, P-Basses and Mustangs for $300 or less. A blackface Pro or Super Reverb could be had for five bills. Today it's all Squires and Starcasters, mebbe a MIM Standard or two once in a while, and Frontman amps.

When time travel is perfected, I'll be the first person in line waiting to buy a ticket......

Agreed--not making any kind of comment against them, just pointing out that might be as "Vintage" as you get for a good price.

Absolutely. Even though it caused so much strife in the Ramones, it's so good.
