Any of you ever heard of him? Someone suggested him to me at a jam last week so I youtube'd him and got blown away. :) I'm both a huge SRV fan and a Robben Ford fan and he kind of fits the bill on both counts. Usually when someone plays with a heavy SRV influenced tone or with a lot of SRV licks it's actually kind of a let down for me. It just doesn't seem as real. But Matt Schofield actually plays it like his own, with his own sound and style which is really cool. He has a organ player with him too, and he does a lot of jazzier stuff. He basically sounds like I'd want to sound ten or fifteen years from now. So anyway, if you haven't heard him and you like blues, rock, jazz or funk you need to give him a listen. :D

Thanks for the heads-up. I hadn't heard of Matt before your post. Very nice!

Hi TGS: so interested to see you've come across Matt Schofield. That means at last he's beginning to reach the parts he needs to reach.

I'm iffy about his singing and perhaps some of his material. But I think the guitar playing is seriously nice and well worth anyone's time to pay some attention to. I particularly like the occasional jazzy chord voicings and note choices you mentioned. That's refreshingly a little different in the hard core blues field.

More info and plenty of sounds to be found on Matt's webiste:

Recommended!

I for one am very impressed with his singing and his playing, very soulful and moving. I thoroughly enjoyed the videos that I watched and would recommend him to anyone. Definitely someone worth keeping an eye on in the future. Thanks for the heads up!

Matt Schofield is a phenomenal player. When you listen to him, you can definitely tell he was influenced by SRV and Robben Ford.

I highly recommend his "Live from the Archive" CD.

I think he might actually have played here sometime fairly recently. I kept hearing something about a blues guitar player from Great Britain and it could have been him. If it was I'd have to kick myself in the butt for not seeing him, but I've only found out about him last week. He also kind of reminds me of an extremely talented local (well, he lives in Austin but he's from Houston) blues guitarist named Alan Haynes. Search his name on youtube, he's another guy worth checking out. His music isn't readily available however. I had to have a friend who went to see him live pick a CD up for me, it's not even on iTunes.

Just remember that because I'm into blues doesn't really mean that most Texans are. For most Texans it's everything the rest of the country listens to, plus country. In the city, some people don't like country. People generally like blues, but often they don't know what they're hearing. So even though they may like ZZ Top and SRV, they probably don't know who Howlin' Wolf is. And then there are others who completely write off the entire genre because they have the perception that all blues is three chords, five notes, and sounds alike. They have no idea of the real depth of it. I know I didn't, not until a couple of years ago. I've never been outside of the Texas/Louisiana Gulf Coast region, but I get the impression that people in Europe appreciate our roots music more than we do.
