A technique that looks quite cool but has been bothering me is down picking to create that heavy sound in some thrash metal songs.

Any advice?

The only advise that is truly meaningful in a discussion of this subject is:

"Only pluck the strings on the down stroke ... lift the pick off the strings during the up stroke."

Any questions?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

this might very well be the only thing i do good on guitar. at the time i was starting to teach myself to play, i was really into thrash metal. ALL of it. as said above, it takes practice. the only advice i can give is to reast your pick hand on the bridge slightly muting the strings being played. make sense? i hope someone will explain this better than me.

If your talking about the "chugging" sound, it's called palm muting. All you do, as said previously is lightly rest your picking hand against the strings right where they come over the saddles, and pick away. You may need to move your hand back and forth slightly to find the right spot to rest it, but eventually you'll get it.
