I was looking into an attenuator for my Valve Jr. and saw that they can be quite pricey. I was reading a book on tube amps and there was a section on making your own attenuator. I figured what the heck. The parts came to about $40. I put it together last night and it works quite well, I think. There is also a schematic for building one for higher wattage amps. This one is for a lower watt model (like 20watts or less). There were different specs depending on the resistance (ohms) for your amp. The junior is 16ohms with the matching cabinet.

Not pretty, but functional; here are a few pics:

Great job-does it give you a very noticeable volume cut and still allow good sound at bedroom volumes?

Thanks Alan, I was thinking I need a grommet on that thing. Let me know and I'll email a parts list and diagram. It's very simple as you can see.

The volume cut is quite noticeable and I think the amp sounds amazing. You can get some nice breakup now without rattling the windows. It is perfect for this amp. I've heard that a lot of guys change the tubes and speaker on these amps, but I really am loving the sound with the mods I installed and now the attenuator. According to the book where I got the diagram and parts list, this would work for a lower wattage amp like 25W or less. There is also a diagram for an attenuator for a more powerful amp.

Let me know if you would like the very simple diagram and parts list and I'll email it to you.
