take a look at the panasonic dmc tz - 6 or the bigger in the tz series, brilliant little camera, 12x optical zoon, awsome image stabilizer... i have one and it rivals a nikon d 90 picture quality wise... and the thing i like is that it has almost no noise at all...

 I take it this is just your personal opinion right? There are really no pocket camera that rivals a DSLR. I'd also debate the no noise at all. I think I have a pretty good point of reference. I do this for a living as well as photo restoration work. I do all my own post processing in Adobe Photoshop CS5 and I am well aware of noise issues in digital capture files. There are a lot of factors that determine noise in a digital photograph. ISO setting, lens quality and sensor size to name a few. Even $8,000 DSLR's exhibit some noise in the higher ISO range, even full frame sensors. Not much but it's there. Pocket digital cameras are what they are, a convenient way to take a photograph. If a pocket could rival a DSLR, I'd would save myself tens of thousands of dollars in camera and lighting gear and use one. They do a nice job, but your comparison to a D90 is pretty inaccurate. Panasonic makes a nice point and shoot. The higher end Lumix DSLR systems are pretty nice and use Leica optics, but the Four Thirds sensors pioneered by Olympus leaves me cold especially in the noise department in the higher ISO range. Fact is, very few professional photographers that I know use Panasonic, Sony or Olympus. For some of my work I rent medium format digital cameras. But that's a whole different animal.

Not etched in stone yet, but I'm leaning towards a Nikon Coolpix S8000. Seems like it's good for low light, and flash photos with good zoom for a light, portable p&s.

So...anything look bad, or not that great about it?

Again, not ready to pull the trigger yet as many I haven't looked at yet.

I'd roll with that Mike. ISO 3200, 3 fps for 45 shots. Great choice.
It has better sensitivity than the Canon Sureshot. The Nikon specs look better all way round.

Hey Mike...I don't know if I'm too late here. But I have a Kodak EasyShare CD83. 14mp, tripod mountable and and optical zoom. It takes amazing pictures, and pretty decent video too if that matters to you. It fits comfortably in my pocket and it's super easy to use. Also it changes UV filters and from macro to normal automatically. Should be able to find one for a pretty good price online if it interests you. I'm no pro like these other guys, but I definitely like this camera.
I know you took part in the post when I got my new camera at Christmas, but here's what I thought was the clearest picture, the only editing I did to it was resizing and cropping.

And one more that was pretty clear...

Mike, Go ahead pull the trigger. So far the Nikon is the best suggestion yet.

Here's another link. Looks really impressive for a point and shoot.
