Today I had 2 more CDs come from the Musical Heritage Society to add to my Ravi Shankar collection. It was George Harrison who sparked my interest in Ravi Shankar but when I watched the film Monterey Pop and heard and saw him that's what really clinched it.George often said that Ravi was the world's greatest living musician and I wouldn't say that he was far off in his observation.I love to just sit back and listen to his ragas and other works, his mastery of the instrument is truly amazing and to watch him sometimes his fingers are faster than what the eye can pick up and are just a blur.So does anyone else appreciate this musical wizard?BTW the Society often sells his CDs for less than $5 and there are several put out under the heading The Ravi Shankar collection. He is also the father of the fabulously beautiful and talented Norah Jones.

PFFFFFFFT!

I was there. And in all honesty, Shankar was the lamest act of the entire festival. I left about ten minutes after he opened on Sunday to get something to eat, check out the vendors on the midway, and score some pharmaceuticals for later on. When I returned about forty-five minutes later he was still playing the same goofy "song".

B - O - R - I - N - G !

It was such a pleasant relief when Big Brother & THC came on afterwards.

I discovered him among my parent's record collection (they had pretty eclectic tastes which I seem to have inherited). I have to be in the mood for it, but I like it. You can hear the influence of Indian music in some 60's rock music too. I think the Beatles, Cream, and Hendrix all borrowed a thing or two. :)

It's great music to listen to on a lazy summer's day laying in the sun with a jug of Margaritas and a few spliffs of the herb.

I love the guy and his music, but a thirty minutes long raga can't be compared to a three minutes song composed to generate immediate cash flow. What would most of the people know about India if it wasn't for Ravi Shankar or Mahatma Gandhi? :)

i saw the concert for bangladesh when it came out in theatres many years ago. i thought i was going to die from boredom before the good stuff started. yes , he's talented but it all sounds the same after about 2 minutes.

that's why i don't get in to reggae. most songs sound the same to these ears.
