That's absolutly tragic,I've always loved Gerry's music and his Ferguslie Park album is one of my all time favourites. Star from that album was on the juke box at our university bar and I'd pump quarters into it all night long constantly replaying that song. Another musical great taken long before his time-it's turning into an epidemic. God Bless you Gerry Rafferty and Thanks for many years of beautiful music.

Sad news he wrote some cool tunes...

Still can't hear Stuck in the Middle without thinking about Reservoir Dogs (Michael Madsen was a sick puppy)

This may sound cold but I was wondering why so many great musicians die before their time but the ones that are just plain mediocre or annoying seem to be immortal-pity it isn't the other way around.

"Right down the line" is one of my all-time favorite songs. Always loved the harmony and words. Very sad news indeed.

Re The great sax solo on Baker Street:The sax solo on Baker Street was composed by Gerry and he played it on the original demo tape however when it came for the studio recording they called in gifted sax player Raphael Ravenscroft.Raph as he is called by friends has played on countless hit songs but most notably on major hits by Tom Cochrane and Red Ryder-there are many others as I have seen his name on the credits of several of my albums but T.C. is the only one I could think of at the moment.

Hi guitslinger: that's a great factoid. And here's another: I just looked on Wikipedia and it says Ravenscroft was paid a princely £27 / $41 for the session - with a cheque that bounced! Good grief!

Anyhow. It's a neat sax part and an excellent example of how memorable playing doesn't always have to have thousands of high speed notes.

Cheers - C

For me Rafferty only brings back pleasant memories, surfing, beach, wet sandy dogs, glassy 4 to 6 ft offshore point break tubes on an island 14 miles off New England :) :)
