Sometime this year I hope to get my old '65 Strat back in playing condition again.Due to a poor "restoration"job by an "expert" friend of mine and an unfortunate experiment with stain on the body I have to paint the guitar a solid colour.Since I'm a huge Beatles fan and since I love the colour anyway I've decided to go with sonic blue.Fender used to use automotive paint and colours from the big 3 back in the 60s.Can anyone give me info on where to find Sonic Blue or an extremely close match?

Thanks Arjay, they have Sonic Blue also. It's been years since I refinished a guitar and I forget if one can of paint is enough or if I'll need 2 plus clearcoat.

Hi gs,

I thing you will have tuff time shipping reranch stuff or any nitro based paints north of US border. I thing GM automotive body shops should match the color, however you will get a water based poly paint. Just tell them you are restoring an old chevy :)

There was a thread here I believe that someone had an info (paint code) on the sonic blue or was it daphne!

From everything Forum user Twelvebar has told us that is indeed a serious problem. On his thread about doing his Candy Apple Red refin 12B had some useful stuff to say about working with nitro in Canada - but the Forum search utility no longer goes back beyond the recent Forum Refit and I can't find it.

GS, 12B doesn't seem to have been around the Forum much in recent months, so if this turns into a problem for you let me know and I'll email him privately and ask what the solution is.

BTW: I searched quite hard a couple of years ago and could never find an automotive paint code for Sonic Blue. It must be out there - I'd be glad if anyone can let us know what it is.

Cheers - C

I use Krylon Blue Ocean Breeze. Its in between Daphne and Sonic with a touch of green. Really its pretty, although I do like Sonic better. I used 1 1/4 cans and 1 can of clear gloss coat. I think the whole job cost about 25.00, paper and all.
