I'm using the same flux core solder coil that I bought about 25 years ago so I imagine it has a pretty high lead content but there's only about 8" of it left.

I've tried the lead free solder. I don't think it works as well as the old school solder. I went out and bought a spool of the old stuff after a few tries.

If you can get it to flow then it will stick, given enough cleaning and flux, but it doesn't like to flow in my experience. For copper piping it simply won't work. At least I couldn't get it to. I had to recut the tube and solder in a coupling/extension and buy a new valve. In wiring it's not subjected to the same stresses so the flow does not have to be as complete but you still need to pre-clean just as you would with plumbing, even if you use paste or rosin core, or it won't flow at all. Rough up your pot bodies and fan your braided strands out and rough them up too and you can usually force it to flow but only at the risk of overheating the pot body. Maybe sombody else here has the secret formula to make it work but I sure don't.

I had to take a look at my spool because I couldn't remember what I bought but it's 50/50 with rosin core. Part of the label is missing but I can make that much out.

Anything except plumbing solder.

Why worry about something so meaningless?

this crap just says rosin core solder for electrical use.
melting point 440F
99.3% tin 0.7% copper.

I have 60/40 ...have had it for decades! Shows how much soldering I do!
Never tried the new lead-free so can't comment. When did that stuff come out? :?:

When I plumbed some new forced-HW heating system I had the 60/40.
When I re-wired new pots into my Hamer, I used 60/40.

Can't see why it wouldn't work. Plumbers and electricians would be up in arms if it didn't.
