Bruce Springsteen.
9 reasons why:
1. Can write. Wrote Born to Run (the album) aged 25. Enough said.
2. Can play. Check out any Darkness show. Prove it all night, Candy's room, Because the night contain some impressive guitar work. Put it back in the closet and went into the rhythm role when Nils was introduced. But it's still there.
3. Can sing. I prefer the 1970's voice (as I slap my suspenders) but he has understood the change in his voice over time and directed it to include folk music while still being able pump out the rock songs (modified admittedly) within his limitations.
4. Can lead. One of the longest running original line up bands going around.
5. Can tour. Bought rock into the stadiums in the 80s (slap again) and still going strong today - see Hyde Park 2009.
6. Can sell. Anything he puts his name too, if he chooses to.
7. Can sell out. See point 5 - not 6.
8. Plays a Tele. Where's ME?
9. IS STILL HERE!

Good call Harry. I'd say he's right up there.

The question begs another question:
-the last of..... or the last as of this moment. What's waiting in the wings may yet surpass anything that has come down the pike so far.

Singularly Rock Star I would say Elvis Presley and Freddie Mercury both had a stage presence very few could come close too. Shows that people never forget!!!!

it seems that there's several guys that grew up in the 90's here. i see Cobain on here and Axl. although GnR was from the 80's i guess they were around long enough to make an impression.younger guys seem to be a little predjudice to the new music, thats ok, but lets consider the over all. what defines a "Rock Star"......stage presence, talent, sales, fans? i don't know if anyone will agree because he's not considered a Rock Star anymore but i'm going to say Clapton. he's got the talent, presence, sales and fans not only those but he was there literally at the start of rock music. although he is mainly a blues artist, 3 times inducted in the hall of fame may be enough to qualify him as ONE of the great rock stars. by the way it's not only what you young dudes like. whitch one of us wouln't give a nut to be what he is. he's got a sinatre model from 3 major guitar companies.

The way I read the OP's point, there's been no one since Cobain, past or present. :?

Never celebrate suicide. Hope you never have the misfortune of knowing it's impact on a family and friends, not to mention the life sadly and unfortunately discarded. The larger picture is reflected in the wide audience to whom he spoke and who understood and accepted his message. That concerns me more. :?

I am just surprised we have made it 5 pages without someone laying out a 5 paragraph response as to why the last Great and current greatest rock star in the galaxy is John Mayer.

In that you raised the issue, I'd speculate that it's likely a given having been subtley reitterated throughout the length and breadth of this thread by his audience. :?

keith richards came out in the 60s...... people keep naming guys from the 60s, 70s, 80s, etc.... but there have been great "rock stars" since then, and not to sound like a fanboy, but Cobain WAS the last one to blow up and leave a massive, lasting impression on music.... since then there have been no real rock mega stars that truly impacted music.

ps: Cage The Elephant have the potential to become "great rock stars", anyone agree?
